Cyberpunk 2077: That's why the multiplayer had to give way

from Claus Ludewig
The development studio CD Projekt Red has explained why the multiplayer mode in Cyberpunk 2077 had to give way. The background was the bumpy market launch of the action RPG.

About the Action RPG Cyberpunk 2077 Much has been written in recent years, and it has been commercially available since 2020. Especially the console versions for Playstation 4 and Xbox One could not meet many expectations. They were even forced to stop selling the game temporarily until the problems were dealt with. With this launch phase, the Polish developer studio and publisher CD Projekt Red had to change priorities, as CDPR’s Philipp Weber explained to Eurogamer. Consequently, the Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer postponed. A year ago there was a statement that the plan had been reconsidered.

This is what CDPR plans for Cyberpunk 2077 in 2023

A standalone multiplayer game for Cyberpunk was originally intended, but nothing will come of it. CD Projekt Red makes single player titles, focusing on story-driven triple-A RPGs. An online approach is envisaged for the future, but online elements should only be implemented where they make sense. In 2023 the single player expansion Phantom Liberty for Cyberpunk 2077 will be released

According to the developers, the expansion should only be available for PC, Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There will also be a GOTY edition that will contain all previous updates including the DLC. Once work on Phantom Liberty is complete, CDPR will work on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion.
