Mario Kart 8 Deluxe brings a small but nice item function into the game with the free update

If desired, Mario and Co. can now dash to the user icons in Nintendo Switch Online.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe not only gets new tracks, but also a new item option.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe not only gets new tracks, but also a new item option.

Anyone who owns Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the booster track pass can currently look forward to a total of 8 new courses for the fun racer. Because Nintendo has just released DLC wave number 3, which adds revised versions of the forest of papers from Mario Kart Wii or the completely new Bergbescherung course to the game, among other things.

But everyone without a route booster pass will also get a free update for Nintendo’s long-running racing game. And that doesn’t just include “invisible” customizations, but actually a cool feature that some out there may have even been asking for for a while.

Determine available items even more precisely now

Because after the update it is possible to specify exactly which extra items can be collected and used before offline vs races and various online modes.

And that’s how it works:

  • In the pre-race options, navigate to the Items section
  • Select the setting “Individual”
  • If you confirm now, you will get to the selection screen

This is what the new item selection screen looks like.

Just want to play with Turbo Mushrooms and Stars? Click on the corresponding items! Are you only into green and red tanks? Then just select this one. Random determinations are also possible, you can also play completely without items or even make fixed assignments of certain items to individual teams in battle races.

So, at first glance, this is a small new option, but its effects are quite profound, which can create completely strange racing conditions, for example if only the mighty Kugelwilli is in play. So far, item selection was possible in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but these were grouped together. The new selection is much finer and therefore automatically more interesting.

I won’t say that more accurate item selection is one of the things I personally would have loved to see in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but I’m really excited about the new option. Because that automatically makes me want to try out certain races with different item constellations just to see what happens. The word “sandbox” is certainly a bit too high here, but it’s a bit of a sandbox for me.

Above all, however, it shows that Nintendo also adjusts small things in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe beyond the booster route pass and also makes these options available to everyone without the optional DLC. This fuels the hope for me to see more such small but fine features in the future.
