Batgirl: This star’s success could save the dead film
Months after Batgirl was officially removed from the Warner Bros. release calendar, the film’s directing duo is raising hopes for a potential release. According to Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, it’s possible that the success of a Batgirl actor could save the film.
In August 2022, this message hit like a bomb: bat girl will not be released, although the entire film had already been shot and was already being edited. Digital effects were still missing, but Warner Bros. is said to have put over $70 million into the project at this point. In order to still save the projected costs, nothing is currently coming out of the release of the DC adventure with Leslie Grace in the lead role. She would have featured alongside Brendan Fraser (The Mummy) as Batman villain Firefly. And in that fact, according to the Batgirl duo, there is a glimmer of hope.
Oscar for Brendan Fraser could save Batgirl
in the Interviewed by Variety Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah praised Fraser’s performance: “He’s so, so talented. The way he played that character…that was one of the most memorable villains.”
Fraser belongs due to his role in the upcoming drama The Whale by director Darren Aronofsky (e.g. Black SwanNoahThe WrestlersRequiem for a Dream) to the possible Oscar contenders. That is why Adil El Arbi claims: “So we’ll see. Maybe they want to show the film if it wins its Oscar.” You can watch the trailer for the film, which could earn Fraser an Oscar, here:
But it will still be a while until then: the Oscars will take place on March 12, 2023, and Brendan Fraser will also have a good chance of winning the award for Best Actor. So don’t hold your breath waiting for Batgirl – the hope really is vanishingly small. Do you even want a Batgirl release? Or do you trust the Warner executives when they say this film cost the studio more money than it made?
