Battle Realms was considered an insider tip among real-time strategists, but was not a commercial success. The chief developer Ed Del Castillo regained the rights to the game in 2019 and has been working with a small team on an improved version ever since. This as Zen edition titled version has been in Early Access since December 2019 Steam available. There were minor updates at regular intervals, now the major patch with version number 1.58 has been released with some delay.

The most striking innovations relate to the technology: The renderer, which was still based on DirectX 7, has been completely removed, the new one relies on DirectX 9. The supported resolutions only go up to 4k, but not in oversized formats. In addition, textures have been replaced with higher-resolution ones and additional team colors have been added. During the nearly fourteen months since the last major update, the code base has undergone extensive revisions to facilitate future updates. At the same time, the AI and the balance between the factions were improved, the netcode was completely converted to use Steam, the controls were revised and numerous bugs were fixed. See the changelog on Steam for the full list.

Zen Edition is available on Steam and includes all official content including the addon Winter of the Wolf. There is not yet a date when the early access status should be left.
