The Dualsense Edge is great, but the price is a joke

Opinion: The DualSense Edge is a slap in the face for Sony fans (3)

When I held the Dualsense Edge in my hand before the release, I thought it was great – without expecting anything. But I was amazed when I was told the price. 240 euros. Sure, quality costs, but in this case I’m skeptical whether that’s justified.

With the Dualsense Edge, which will be released in January, multiple player profiles can be created with their own key assignments. The sensitivity of the sticks is adjustable and of course there are more buttons to press. But these are not really innovations: Competitor Microsoft has been offering controllers with these functions for years, and at a much more affordable price. But of course they don’t work with the Playstation. And apparently that’s exactly the case knacksus: All professional controllers that are available for the Playstation 5 (buy now €774.00 ) already exist are at a similar price level to Sony’s new product. Third party manufacturer like aim controllers usually use the standard controller as a basis and rebuild it.

Since Sony has the chance to integrate new functions ex works, one could have expected a lower price. A rogue who thinks evil of it. But if the Dualsense Edge is worth its salt, I don’t want to say anything. After all, it offers at least as many functions as equivalent products. Or at least other functions.

Alternatives to the DualSense

The Dualsense Edge works best with the Playstation 5 controllers by Scufgaming compare, each of which also costs more than 200 euros. Both input devices have extra buttons on the back that can be freely assigned, and player profiles that can be used to quickly call up other button layouts. In addition, the attachments of the sticks can be exchanged on both models.

Where you have to decide with Scuf whether you want the classic adaptive triggers or shoulder buttons with short stops for shooters, you can change that with the Edge at any time using the controller.

And from here the third-party controller falls by the wayside, it doesn’t offer any customization software like the official Sony controller will have. This can be used to adjust dead zones in which the trigger and analog sticks do not perceive any input. And in addition to the buttons on the back, all other buttons can also be reassigned.

With the Dualsense Edge, the Playstation also offers the option of setting sensitivity curves that can be used to change the behavior of the sticks. Compared to direct comparison products, the new luxury controller actually does an excellent job. And yet, as a sworn Playstation gamer, I feel a little ridiculous – what Sony sells as new is old hat at Microsoft.

DualSense Edge | OPINION | A punch in the face

behind the competition

Of the Xbox Elite offers two additional detachable back buttons compared to Edge and all the bells and whistles that can be set on the Playstation 5 from January are already available there. And that for at least 90 euros less than at Sony.

Especially since the Xbox Pro controller makes it possible to change the tension of the analog sticks, making operation more difficult or lighter. And it works for both current and last gen.

What really sets the Sony controller apart: The sticks can be completely swapped there. So not just the attachments, but the entire component. According to Sony, this contributes to the longevity, because the problem of drifting cannot be solved otherwise. For a mere 25 euros per embroidery module However, the spare parts quickly cost money, depending on how long a stick lasts.

Sony emphasizes how proud they are of their technology that allows the modules to be swapped out, and yet they want them to be rock solid. It might have made more sense to take a close look at the longevity of the components. And I expect longevity when I buy a controller that costs almost half the price of the console that goes with it. What’s the use of all the bells and whistles in the world if the components have the same flaws as the standard model?
