Tried Pro Controller for PS5: Dualsense Edge can do that!
Within a genre, most console games play very similarly. With shooters, you can usually reload on the Playstation using a square and change the weapon to a triangle. In action-adventures we can usually block with the left shoulder buttons and sprinting is in almost every game on L3, i.e. if you press the left joystick into the controller. This works sometimes more and sometimes less well and the wish to freely adjust the key assignment has already been fulfilled by many game developers. In some game menus you can freely assign the controller buttons as you like and bypass some questionable game design decisions. This, mind you, is not always possible and the option for reassignment is hidden in the accessibility settings in a relatively cumbersome way on the software side.
That will change from January when the Dualsense Edge appears, which is officially distributed directly by Sony. While there are already controllers on the market that introduce extra functions on the Playstation, the Playstation developer is now launching its own product.
Hardware features of the Dualsense Edge
In addition to software support, the new controller also has hardware-specific innovations:
- Two paddles on the bottom of the controller that can be freely assigned
- Two function keys for quick access to preset features
- Two sliders that can be used to shorten the shoulder button triggers
The two paddles on the underside can not only be freely assigned, but also exchanged. An enclosed variant corresponds to the elongated shape that has already established itself for such keys; the alternative also sent by Sony is small and round, which is why the Japanese manufacturers affectionately call them Go stones in their presentation.
The function keys are located on the bottom of the joysticks on the Dualsense Edge and act like the fn keys for the PC. In combination with other buttons, you can quickly switch through so-called player profiles, which we will explain below, or regulate the volume in the game.

The shoulder button controls can be used to shorten the stroke, for example for shooter players. The controls offer a total of three levels with which the length of the trigger can be adjusted. At the lowest level, haptic feedback is turned off.
In addition to new functions, the feel can also be changed in just a few simple steps. In addition to the paddles on the back, the analog stick attachments can also be changed and even the entire stick units can now be exchanged.
Dualsense Edge software features
Sony introduces a software-side interface. However, the new surface can only be controlled via Sony’s in-house controller and is only available to owners of the Edge controller. Players with standard controllers have to do without all features.
About the new interface of the Playstation 5 (buy now €777.77 ) A whole range of settings can be changed and saved in up to 30 player profiles.
- All buttons can be freely assigned, beyond the paddles on the back
- Analog stick dead zones and sensitivity curves can be set
- Trigger dead zones can be set
The fact that all buttons on the controller can be reassigned is nothing new on the Playstation. Thanks to the introduced player profiles, different key assignments can now be rotated on the fly without having to switch to the settings menu.
If you have problems with drifting, i.e. that many controllers register an input in the game at some point, although the input device is idle, you can now generally set dead zones for the joysticks. You can also set how sensitive the sticks are at different inclinations and also scale the corresponding curves.

Dead zones can also be assigned to the shoulder keys, both at the start and at the end of the input spectrum. This means that input paths beyond the hardware controls can be shortened and adjusted more sensitively. An input triggered by mistake by simply placing your finger on the trigger can also be avoided in this way.
In addition to the key assignment, all other settings are also assigned to the respective player profiles. In this way, different dead zones and sensitivity curves can be called up without having to switch them over for different games each time.

January does nothing new
With the Dualsense Edge, Sony closes a gap that hasn’t existed on other platforms for a long time. None of the supposed innovations are really new, except that they are now also available on the Playstation.
Some functions also feel as if they are simply intended to circumvent the weaknesses of their own hardware. With dead zones for the analog sticks, Sony is responding to the problem of drifting, which is why many of the standard controllers are no longer usable after just a few months.
This problem is also answered by the fact that entire stick modules can be exchanged. However, not for zero price, because the replacement modules cost around 25 euros each. Cynically speaking, at a price of just under 240 euros for the entire controller, this is no longer that important, but if you put that much money in your hands, you can expect to get a durable product.
By the way, the software-side interface will not be available for the standard controller, since the controller does not have an interface to save a profile. However, there are no improvements to the existing hardware parts in the DualSense Edge. This mainly affects the battery life, which is shorter than with the standard controller. After all, this has to fall back on more functions. At least the included cable is two and a half meters long enough to compensate for this shortcoming.
