From Software outdoes itself with Elden Ring – Test/Review
Elden Ring is one of the biggest hits of the year and has a whopping 94 points for a reason GamePro test and picked up Game of the Year at the Game Awards. The latest game from From Software is based in many respects on Dark Souls and offers a similarly gloomy art design and demanding battles against some huge, nightmarish enemies that are largely focused on melee combat. In contrast to the Souls games, however, Elden Ring has a large open world in which there are tons of secrets to explore. The freedom of movement ensures that there are fewer moments of frustration, because if you just can’t beat a boss, you just look for another adventure.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Story Campaign Test Video
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, which was released at the end of October, is cheaper both in the cross-gen bundle and in the so-called Vault Edition. The latter includes the Battle Pass for one season, additional in-game items and various bonuses such as double experience points for 10 hours. The new Modern Warfare 2 delivers a varied and, despite some lengths, well staged campaign. The multiplayer scores above all with its excellently designed maps as well as with the great gunplay and well-balanced weapons. However, you will have to get used to the mixture of a very low time to kill and relatively slow movement speed. There are many new modes and ideas for this.

FIFA 23

FIFA 23 trailer shows the new grass experience
The last football game from EA for the time being, which still bears the name FIFA, is available for half price in both the PS4 and PS5 versions. There are quite a few improvements compared to its predecessor, both in Career and Ultimate Team modes as well as on the pitch. However, one should not expect spectacular innovations and of course Ultimate Team is full of microtransactions again this year. Nevertheless, with FIFA 23 you get a comprehensive football game that skillfully balances simulation and beginner-friendly arcade gameplay. If you want to play with the current licenses and your favorite club, you have little choice anyway.

Gotham Knights

Gotham Knights – Open World Action Game Review Video
Gotham Knights, released exactly two months ago, is also half price. The action game from the studio behind Batman: Arkham Origins stays close to the system of the Arkham games with the powerful and fast-paced hand-to-hand combat. However, Batman is dead in Gotham Knights, so instead we’re playing Batgirl, Robin, Red Hood, and Nightwing, who try to replace him as best we can. This brings some variety to the gameplay, because even if the standard attacks are the same, all four have their own special abilities and skill trees. Unfortunately, Gotham Knights doesn’t reach the quality of the Arkham games, but it’s still fun, which is why you can take a look, at least at a reduced price.

Need for Speed Unbound Palace Edition

Need for Speed Unbound – Gameplay trailer shows races in the open world
Need for Speed Unbound, which was released earlier this month, is cheaper in the Palace Edition, which offers four new cars and a number of other additional in-game items. The new Need for Speed has again become a fun arcade racer that focuses more on breakneck speed than on a realistic simulation. Nevertheless, the claim is a bit higher than in older series parts, because the AI acts much smarter and mercilessly as in the previous Heat. The progress system with its numerous tuning options ensures a high level of motivation. In principle, we also liked the chases with the police, although the law enforcement officers are sometimes very pushy.

Stray

Stray really is one of the most beautiful games of the year – and it’s really good too
Possibly the biggest surprise hit of 2022, Stray won the Game Awards for Best Indie Game. The adventure owes its success to a large extent to its protagonist: We play a great animated and pretty cute cat who was separated from her family and now roams the streets of a city populated by human-like robots alone. Here we experience many little stories that gradually tell us more about the mysterious game world. The gameplay consists largely of puzzles and platforming. However, the focus is not on the playful challenge, but on the atmospheric experience.

Disney Dreamlight Valley: Trailer introduces the winter update with Toy Story
Disney Dreamlight Valley, which was released in September, is a life simulation in the style of Animal Crossing, but with Disney and Pixar characters such as Mickey, Ariel and Wall-E. We must restore order to the overgrown Dreamlight Valley, transform it into an idyllic place and settle the Disney characters here. But we have to find some of the latter first, for which we embark on adventures in foreign realms, in which we solve numerous puzzles and mess with famous villains. The standard version is 25 percent cheaper. There is even a 30 percent discount on the Ultimate Edition, which comes with many additional in-game items and a lot of game currency.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human

Dying Light 2 challenges your parkour skills even more
Dying Light 2: Stay Human, which was released at the beginning of the year, differs from other open world and zombie games primarily because of its parkour system. This lets us race over the roofs of the city at breathtaking speed and jump over the heads of the undead. But that only works really well once we have unlocked the appropriate skills, because Dying Light 2 has an extensive progression system. Otherwise, of course, there is a lot of action again, both with firearms and melee weapons. Variety comes into play through the day-night changes, because while we can explore the area during the day, the zomies become significantly stronger at night, turning Dying Light 2 into a horror game.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

There has never been so much Lego Star Wars – The Skywalker Saga in the test
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is a must-read for Star Wars fans simply because of its scope. We can replay all three Star Wars trilogies, in any order. While the gameplay essentially follows the well-known mix of action, puzzles and exploration, there are improvements. The fights in particular have become much more exciting thanks to the new combo system. In addition, the spectacular space battles provide playful variety. A lot has also happened graphically, and the presentation also captivates with the atmospheric Star Wars soundtrack. Added to this is the typical LEGO humor, through which the film role models are lovingly parodied.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 trailer introduces Edgerunners update 1.6
Of course, Cyberpunk 2077 is not originally from 2022, but it got its big next-gen update in spring, which means that the action role-playing game, at least on PS5, has reached the technical quality that we would have wished for from the start. In terms of content, Cyberpunk 2077 has always been a really good RPG. Above all, the multi-layered characters and interesting and mature stories, which are often told in well-written side quests, as in The Witcher 3, have done it to us. The game world was also implemented atmospherically. Cyberpunk 2077 sends us into the streets of the futuristic metropolis Night City, which is ruled by criminals and ruthless corporations.
