SWTOR: 11 years in a galaxy far, far away – and a move to the cloud
At the end of the year and on the 11th anniversary since the release of the online role-playing game Star Wars: The Old Republic, Bioware developer and executive producer Keith Kanneg reviewed the year – and announced birthday bonuses in the MMO as well as plans for server moves to the cloud on.
The developers of the online role-playing game Star Wars: The Old Republic celebrate the 11th anniversary of the MMO together with the fans; on December 20, 2011 the starting shot was fired. Undoubtedly a bold date for the release of an online role-playing game in view of the upcoming holiday season. A lot of time has passed since then, techniques and possibilities have changed – and now MMO developers no longer have to regard releases before the turn of the year as an absolute no-go.

Server move to the cloud
In his Letter to the community speaking Keith Kanneg not only about the challenges that the development team had to deal with this year, including the release of Legacy of the Sith, but also takes a look into the future. “We’ve been modernizing the game for a while and now some of these changes are reflected in the interface. We’ve updated our forums and launcher with new technologies and are in the process of upgrading the game to 64-bit,” said Kanneg. The following note is even more interesting, because a change from physical game servers to game data from the cloud is apparently planned.
“We’ve also successfully tested content on servers hosted in the cloud. This was an initiative we’ve been working on for much of the year and now we can finally talk about it. The final rounds of testing on the Public Test Server on AWS have been completed. The current tests have been successful and we are already looking forward to the next steps. Moving servers completely to the cloud will allow us to improve the gaming experience and continue to expand the player base in the near future. All these initiatives serve as a foundation for more changes.” We are really excited to see how this will play out and make itself felt.
