In the popular multiplayer mode of Grand Theft Auto 5 – also known as GTA Online – there is currently an exploit that was discovered after the recently leaked source code. Based on the GTA code, attackers can not only use cheats particularly effectively in online mode, but potentially also access the PCs of other players who are also connected in multiplayer.
If the attack took place in GTA Online, the loss of in-game currency or the game account is the worst outcome that can be brought about by the exploit. The potential to use the vulnerability in GTA 5 to infect computers with viruses and malware is probably significantly more security-critical. reported on this possibility TezFunz2 on Twitter.
The exploit itself is therefore a so-called “Partial Remote Code Execution”. This means executing program code remotely, which is usually unauthorized and usually contains malware. It is possible, for example, to change the system settings, access administrator rights or completely take over the system.
The publisher Rockstar Games behind GTA 5 and Online has now also commented on the topic. Via Twitter the studio announced that they are aware of the problem and are working on a solution, which should be made available as a short-term title update as soon as possible. However, it may be a few days before the hotfix is released – there is no real workaround, so some users even recommend not even starting GTA Online until the problem has been fixed.
