A prototype AMD Vega 20 card has surfaced on Reddit. The prototype is full build, which wasn’t a lot of cards, and may be related to the never-released Radeon Pro V420.

A Reddit user was able to snag a Vega 20 from AMD that never made it to the regular market. The prototype of the Radeon Pro has the chip soldered to its full configuration. A number of graphics cards based on Vega 20 have appeared, but they are rare when fully developed. Full expansion here means: 64 compute units with a total of 4,096 shaders. For example, installed on the Radeon Instinct MI60, together with 32 GiB HBM memory. On it, the chip was clocked with 1,200 MHz base and 1,600 MHz boost clock and should primarily perform AI calculations. The chip also appeared in Macs as the Radeon Pro Vega II and Radeon Pro Vega II Duo – clocked differently, but configured the same.

Neither of which is the map on Reddit. It is aesthetically based on the Radeon Pro V420, which also never made it to series production. Manufactured using the 7 nm process, it is the Vega 20 GLXT WS variant that describes the full configuration. The V420 should calculate with 800 MHz base and 1,700 MHz boost clock.

The Reddit card is read by the MI60 because it has the same device ID. But that’s not reliable: This is how GPU-Z reports memory from SK Hynix; However, modules from Samsung are installed. The owner reports two firmwares with different power limits. Somewhat surprisingly, the cooler even has RGB elements installed. The radial fan with a maximum of 5,000 rpm runs at 3,800 rpm under load; but then the card keeps at least below 80 °C. 1,700 MHz boost is typically achievable; slightly fewer than full-blown cards that have made it onto the market.

Metrics, meanwhile, aren’t particularly helpful as the card, being a prototype, doesn’t have enough software support to compete with models that make it to market. However, 6.4 TFLOPS in double precision are feasible; around 14 percent less than the MI60. Ultimately, the card certainly wouldn’t have been a silver bullet, but it’s one of the oddities of the market.
