Rick & Morty Co-Creator and Voice Actor Fired – Serious Allegations
With Justin Roiland, the cartoon series Rick and Morty not only loses its co-creator, but also the spokesperson for Rick, Morty and many supporting characters. How did Adult Swim come to this decision? We explain to you why Roiland has become unsustainable for the company.
Some had suspected it over the past few weeks, but now it’s official: Justin Roiland, Rick and Morty’s voice actor and co-creator (alongside Dan Harmon), will no longer be voicing the characters he became famous for . Adult Swim, the studio behind R&M, has ended the collaboration. Dan Harmon will continue as showrunner on the series. But why has Roiland become so unbearable?
Justin Roiland: Allegations of domestic violence and more
The spokesperson for characters like Rick and Morty is currently in court, facing charges of domestic violence from 2020. The exact charge accuses Roiland not only of “domestic violence with bodily harm” but also of “deprivation of liberty through threats, violence, fraud or deception”. Roiland has pleaded not guilty and his attorney called the media coverage “inaccurate” in a statement on the case.
At the same time, since the hearing on January 12, 2023, reports of people who also accuse Roiland of abuse have been piling up on social media. It is particularly striking that, according to chat screenshots, Roiland is said to have coerced and sexually molested minors. (via TIME.com)
Gaming studio also separates from Roiland
The developers of the comedy shooter High on Life, which appeared in the game pass, will no longer work with Roiland, who has resigned. He founded the studio in 2016 with Tanya Watson.
What does this mean for Rick and Morty?
According to Adult Swim, the series about the amoral inventor Rick and his grandson Morty will continue. The speaking roles in the English original will be recast. Roiland was most recently involved in the writing process for Season 4, so it’s not as if his creative input will be absent for the upcoming Season 7 and subsequent planned seasons. For those who are worried about R&M’s unique voices, we can give an example of impersonators who can do the voices just as well:
In the German version we don’t have to worry: Kai Taschner will continue to lend his voice to Rick, while Tim Schwarzmaier is still responsible for Morty’s soundtrack. The future of the series Solar Opposites, which was recently extended by a fifth season, also relies on Roiland’s voice and was also created by him, is still uncertain.
