The most recent developer update for Ashes of Creation included a preview of the current version of the tank archetype – with 47 minutes of gameplay in 4K! In addition, Creative Director Steven Sharif spoke about further progress that could be made in the course of development in recent weeks.
On Friday, January 27, 2023, the new Ashes of Creation developer update took place with Creative Director Steven Sharif and Community Marketing Lead Margaret Krohn. In the almost 100 minutes there was, among other things, a preview of the current version of the tank archetype – with 47 minutes of gameplay in 4K! Steven Sharif also spoke about further progress that could be made in the course of development in recent weeks.
The tanks in Ashes of Creation
A large portion of the stream covered the current state of the tank archetype in Alpha Two. First some attacks of the tank were introduced:
- Shield Assault: Bash your target with the shield, dealing damage and applying a “Shaken” debuff. If the opponent is already suffering from this effect, they will be stunned. Has a range of seven meters and can be used as a short charge.
- Initiating strikes: Dual cleave attack that generates additional threat on enemies hit (but not as much threat as Shield Assault on one enemy).
- Tremoring Bellow: Cast a Thunderous Shout, applying a Staggered Debuff to the targets in front of you. At the same time, you shake the ground, dealing damage around you and tripping enemies affected by a Snared Debuff.
- grit: You gain a constant buff that reduces incoming damage by 15 percent. At the same time, your movement speed is reduced by 30 percent and the damage you deal is reduced by 20 percent. Each incoming hit consumes a stack of Courage, reducing incoming damage by an additional 15 percent. While Grit is active you cannot build Courage stacks (apparently stacks build automatically on tanks when Grit is not active).
- aegis: You instantly remove all negative effects on you and create a protective dome behind you for 15 seconds, redirecting 50 percent of damage taken to targets within the area to the tank. Inside the dome, all targets also gain an increased resistance status effect.
Compared to the Alpha 1, the tank now has significantly more defensive maneuvers, attacks to generate threat, control abilities, and synergy between individual skills. You can also actively fend off attacks with a shield.
Tank gameplay from Ashes of Creation
The four characters being controlled by the developers in the stream are around level 15, so they’re far from having the full range of abilities. You can check out the full gameplay demonstration below. You can expect fights against smaller minotaur groups, but also longer boss fights. In addition, Steven Sharif earns a hammer-shield combination in the course of the quest, which you then exchange for his two-handed sword.
Incidentally, in the course of the approximately 47 minutes you will also see the new quest overview, a display for the quest tracking and the loot distribution window.
Ambitious goals for 2023
In the stream, Creative Director Steven Sharif didn’t just talk about tanks, but more generally about the progress the team has made recently and the goals they have set for Ashes of Creation and the new year.
- January 2023 was the most productive January since the company was founded. The entire team has been at full throttle since the first week of January and there has been significant progress.
- The studio has ambitious goals for the current year. Above all, the team is to be noticeably enlarged, with many of the new job advertisements going online in the course of the next few weeks.
- There will be a decent chunk of money for Ashes of Creation that will go into marketing. But that only happens when the game has reached a certain level. So far, no money has flowed into marketing. As soon as the game has progressed far enough, there will also be videos with which the developers explain in detail what kind of MMORPG Ashes of Creation will actually be.
