E3 2023: Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft will probably not take part

In the course of the global coronavirus pandemic, major events such as trade fairs have been prohibited in many places in recent years in order not to let the local infection process get out of hand. In response, the Entertainment Software Association, among others, developed a purely digital version of the E3 video game fair. However, industry giants such as Sony and Microsoft stayed away. This year, E3 is hosted by Reedpop and is once again taking place physically in Los Angeles with an audience. However, some publishers will again not come to Los Angeles. So Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony are probably missing at E3 2023, as IGN claims to have learned.

E3 2023: Organizer Reedpop speaks of great interest

In recent years there have been numerous differences of opinion between the organizers and the three heavyweights of the video game industry. Too short a period of time between E3 and Gamescom was discussed, for example, because there were disputes about which trade fair a novelty should be shown at. Traditionally, E3 will again take place in June, but it is unclear which publishers to expect. While E3 is still owned by the Entertainment Software Association, this year’s operator will be Reedpop, the company behind events like PAX and EGX, as well as games magazine Eurogamer. In an initial statement, Reedpop says it has received a lot of interest and verbal commitments to attend E3 from some industry giants.

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, digital events have become very popular as it saves game publishers a lot of money. After all, no stand rent has to be paid and no trade fair staff have to be hired. Rather, trailers for new games are shown and a download link to free demo versions of the games shown is published shortly after the show. This also saves visitors long queues. Regardless of the troubled E3, Gamescom will open its doors again in Cologne in August. Microsoft was represented in Cologne last year, but not Sony.
