PlayStation VR2: Sony is said to have halved shipments – what is the reason?
According to the latest media reports, PlayStation manufacturers Sony Interactive the delivery quantity for his PSVR2-Headsets down significantly in the launch quarter.
The successor to the first virtual reality headset from the Japanese game company will be released in just a few days, namely on February 22, 2023. Advance sales for the PSVR2 have been running since November, but this seems to have stalled and is now forcing Sony to act.
PlayStation VR2: Weak pre-orders fall short of Sony’s expectations
A whopping 599.99 euros are due for the basic equipment of PlayStation VR2. A proud price with which Sony charges more than for the PlayStation 5, which is available in its digital edition for less than 500 euros. The first version of the VR headset was also significantly lower at a price of 399 euros.
This could have deterred some interested parties in advance, because like Bloomberg, citing reputable sources reported, Sony has significantly reduced the delivery volume for the launch quarter, which ends on March 31st. Internally, it was initially assumed that there would be two million PS VR2 devices that will be sold to customers who are willing to pay, but this target number has now been reduced by half. In the following year, i.e. between April 2023 and March 2024, the aim is to sell another 1.5 million headsets.
One reason for the disappointing pre-orders could also be found in the principle according to which Sony had made them possible. The PlayStation VR2 packages were initially distributed to customers who were willing to buy via a waiting list system, before reservations were also made possible for the “broad masses” a few weeks ago.
However, Sony’s adjustments to its forecasts for the sale of virtual reality headsets should not spoil the fun. After all, more than 30 titles for the PlayStation VR2 announced and we reveal which ones you can look forward to the most.
