[PLUS] Geforce RTX 4070 Ti tested with five custom designs - comparison with RTX 4080 and RX 7900

The seventies. While some think of a wild time full of change and colorful fashion, PC gamers have other associations. Most of them are positive, because even though Nvidia sparked the “VRAM Gate” with the Geforce GTX 970, the 70s models enjoy a good reputation as an affordable upper class. One might think that this venerable tradition would be continued where the price-boosting GPU mining is over, but Nvidia has other plans: The Geforce RTX 4070 Ti is the most expensive seventies card to date, even by far. In the big test, PCGH explains why this graphics card is still a good choice and what the alternatives look like. Due to the current situation, we are giving a lot of space to the price-performance ratio and to upgrading ideas.

The Geforce RTX 4070 Ti already has a turbulent history behind it. It was announced in September 2022 together with the Geforce RTX 4090 and Geforce RTX 4080 and withdrawn shortly afterwards – it has never existed in this form before. In case you are wondering: The Geforce RTX 4070 Ti is 1:1 the former RTX 4080 12GB. The latter was originally supposed to be released together with the real RTX 4080 (16GB), but the devastating echo after the presentation led to the discontinuation of the RTX 4080 12GB. It is “a fantastic graphics card, but it doesn’t have the right name,” according to Nvidia’s official explanation. Now the RTX 4080 12GB is celebrating its comeback under a new name but with the same specifications – curtain up for the RTX 4070 Ti. Everything came as we had predicted in the previous issue, but in the right order.
