Xbox Series X / S will increase in price in Japan from February 17

The prices of Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will go up in Japan from February 17. Microsoft has announced a 5,000 yen price increase for each console, bringing the 54,978 yen Xbox Series X to 59,978 yen ($461.81) and the 32,278 yen Xbox Series S to 37,978 yen ($292.42).

In a statement to Famitsu (translated by Gematsu), a representative from Microsoft Japan said:

“After carefully evaluating market conditions in Japan, we have decided to change the suggested retail price of Xbox consoles in the country. We regularly assess the impact of local prices to maintain reasonable consistency across regions.

“This price revision impacts our customers and was a difficult decision to make, but moving forward, we will continue to deliver the best Xbox experience our customers have come to expect.”

The decision comes several months after Sony increased the price of the PlayStation 5 in Japan along with Europe, the UK, Africa, Canada, Africa (EMEA) and other regions. It was due to “high global inflation rates” and “adverse currency trends”. The PS5 retails for 60,478 yen ($465.74), while the PS5 Digital Edition costs 49,478 yen ($381.03).

At the time, Microsoft confirmed that Xbox Series X/S prices would remain the same. However, it did announce a price increase for first-party titles, which will cost $70 starting in 2023. For now, Xbox Series X/S prices appear to remain the same in other regions of the world.
