That’s what Mount&Blade 2 – Bannerlord is all aboutJörg, sorry, Jorgos the boss, of course, already knows the game from the long Early Access phase, but of course he’s playing here from scratch and will certainly notice one or the other change since then. As a young man in his early 20s who grew up in the (now tripartite) Empire, he rides horses through the lands, gathering more and more companions and soldiers, all of whom gain experience in combat and other activities. Troops can be upgraded in several stages, companions and family members – like our Bannerlord in Spe himself – can be equipped with skills and equipment like in a role-playing game.

Of course, this above all requires money, and money will remain an issue in Mount & Blade 2 Bannerlord for a long time. If you don’t think about the daily wage payments or underestimate the distances traveled, you will quickly find yourself in a downward spiral. Luckily, there’s money to be made from all sorts of things: trading, questing, arena battles (both passively betting and actively participating), pillaging, fighting and the resulting loot, and, for the more advanced Bannerlords, too with the capture of castles and cities or own businesses in the cities.

Bannerlord early gameThe game is divided into several parts – without a fixed specification, simply through the progression: In the early early game, which we leave with episode 6, it’s all about getting some money and equipment and restoring your own clan to deliver. Only then is it possible to lead at least a medium-sized squad instead of just a dozen or two people.

In the further early game it is usually about deciding on one of the eight factions, taking on orders for their lords and finally being recruited as mercenaries.

Bannerlord mid gameIn the next step – already in the long midgame – you usually join this faction, becoming the banner lord. He is called again and again to go to war, but then also receives fiefs such as a castle or town (including villages), which he should expand and defend. You can even intervene in the political activities of the faction later by participating in voting, using our influence gained in battles. Likewise, we need influence to lead even large armies consisting of several lords and their entourage.

If everything goes well, we will become a powerful general – but we can also continue to act as a trader or instead. Marriage shouldn’t be put off for too long either – a wisely chosen partner is a powerful asset, and children follow, too, who then grow up and become heroes after a corresponding number of years of play.

Mount & Blade 2 Late GameThe aim of the campaign – the sandbox simulation itself, however, in principle continues to run indefinitely – is to put together the dragon banner of the old empire and then either “legally” within one faction, or “illegally” with your own kingdom, to the other factions dominate. Since this requires a lot of grinding and patience, we probably won’t be able to do it in a letsplay – but who knows? We could at least come to founding our own kingdom, assuming viewers are willing to donate!
