The Character Editor: Which Online RPG Has The Best?
Character creation is part of a good (online) role-playing game like sunrise is part of every day – without it it gets pretty dark. Sure, there are RPGs, especially in the area of hack & slay adventures à la Grim Dawn, that do without a hero kit and let you forget the faux pas with their other advantages. And in some other games like The Witcher 3 it doesn’t make any sense to forge your own warrior, after all everything revolves around the eponymous main character.
Updated February 3, 2023: Since numerous new (online) role-playing games have appeared in the last seven years and existing (MMO)RPGs have evolved, we want to ask you again in this updated special: Which game has the best character editor?
The character creation of Black Desert is great, almost everything can be changed here!

With these exceptions, we think the best way to start any heroic adventure is to first and foremost create our own alter ego. But the character editors are as different as the games. The author of these lines has long been a fan of the hero construction kits from Cryptic Studios, for example in Champions Online or Star Trek Online. Thanks to the mass of setting options, you can really let off steam here. The situation is similar with the character editors of Black Desert, Lost Ark and Guild Wars 2, which also look great.
The World of Warcraft hero kit has made a noticeable step forward in recent years. The example animations of the different classes and races look great, the options to choose from are numerous and if personal taste should develop over time, it is easy to make visual corrections at the barber.
Less is not always more
On the other hand, we found the hero creation of The Division disappointing at the time, which we clicked through in a few seconds due to a lack of options – Part 2 had much more to offer here. We were similarly dissatisfied with the options available to us at the start of New World. We struggled to create a hero that we were happy with the way it looked.
But enough about us, how do you feel about character editors in (online) roleplaying games? Is a good construction kit with lots of options important to you? Which game has the best editor in your opinion? And where is hero creation not fun at all? Tell us in the comments!
