Hogwarts Legacy: Breaks Twitch viewership record despite numerous boycott calls
That Hogwarts legacy one of the biggest games of the year, there was little doubt about that even before the release. The first numbers on Twitch.tv now show how much the role-playing game was expected to be.
Since yesterday, owners of the Deluxe Edition of Hogwarts Legacy can finally wave their magic wand themselves and numerous streamers and viewers have also followed the call. In the end, this even set a record: Never before in Twitch history have so many people watched a single-player game live.
Hogwarts Legacy: Cyberpunk 2077 record broken
At the absolute peak, like the numbers from twitchtracker.com show watched on February 7th around 1.25 million people simultaneously live streams from Hogwarts Legacy on Twitch.tv. The magic role-playing game trumped all other categories of the streaming platform that evening and secured the record for the most simultaneous viewers in a single-player game.
So far, Cyberpunk 2077 has held the record. CD Projekt Red’s role-playing game was viewed by around 1.14 million viewers when it was released. The Elden Ring, released in early 2022, also follows behind with over 900,000 viewers.
In the case of Hogwarts Legacy, however, it is probably not just the game itself and the strong license that are responsible for its success, but also the fact that publisher Warner Bros. Games works with Twitch. In light of the release, you can currently get up to five free Twitch Drops to unlock in-game cosmetic items afterwards.
Boycott calls have little effect
The success of Hogwarts Legacy is certainly not too surprising, despite the fact that a boycott was called for several times beforehand due to various controversial statements by the author JK Rowling. The popular Internet forum ResetEra even banned discussion of the game completely from its own site, and resistance to the role-playing game also increased on Steam.
The situation was similarly tense on Twitch.tv: both some streamers and viewers called for not streaming Hogwarts Legacy, as among others Dexerto reported. However, not everyone joined this call, which caused new headwind. Some chats had to be more moderated or there were short-term stream interruptions, such as in the Girlfriend Reviews channel.
