Now there’s an explanation: Emily Rudd (Nami) comments on the many questions about Luffy’s sandals on Instagram and provides a plausible explanation. It’s because all the actors did as many of the stunts themselves as possible.

“All of us did as much of our stunt work ourselves as was allowed (and when we didn’t, it was for safety, which is where our incredible and beyond talented stunt team came into play).

Sandals are unfortunately not the safest footwear to do stunt work in and we didn’t want you all to miss out on the outstanding work that Iñaki Godoy can and has done.”
