Paramount Plus is getting more expensive, pushing into the realm of Disney Plus and Netflix

Paramount Plus is also becoming more expensive – initially in the USA. Experience shows, however, that sooner or later such price increases will also reach Europe.

Paramount Plus hasn’t been available in Germany for long before the first price increase is already looming. In the home market of the USA, an increase of USD 2 was announced in the large subscription from USD 9.99 to USD 11.99 and in the small subscription by USD 1 from USD 4.99 to USD 5.99. Dollar. Experience shows that such price increases always come to Europe in the medium term. As for implementation, it remains vague for the moment: In the third quarter, the increase is expected to come in the USA and is also planned for other countries where Paramount Plus is available.

The reason for the price increase should be the disappointing quarterly figures presented by Paramount. That’s primarily because 2022 has encountered some “headwinds,” as Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish calls it, and 2023 won’t be a big profit year. Last year you had blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick in the program. With the end of the corona measures, however, media companies are finding it increasingly difficult. Disney had just announced an austerity plan.

Showtime is about the leather

However, Paramount global wants to continue investing in its streaming service and is taking a step in the USA that was taken right from the start in Europe – the integration of Showtime into Paramount Plus. On the one hand, this should justify the price increase in the USA and, on the other hand, save 700 million US dollars in the long term. But that also means a whopping write-down on Showtime in the $1.3 to $1.5 billion range.

In Germany, Paramount Plus already contains Showtime content such as Californication or Dexter, which was previously licensed to third parties. The program started in December 2022 for 7.99 euros, but it is also much smaller in scope than in the USA and also has only a few well-known Showtime content. Many users were probably more bothered by the fact that Paramount Plus only has a maximum of 1080p and stereo sound. That’s a pity, especially for new productions like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and 1883. After all, the upgrade is said to come in the course of 2023 – possibly with a two-tier subscription, as is already the case in the USA.
