With the February 17th patch, Returnal on PC got its first update – and at 1.3GB that packs quite a punch. The official patch notes are relatively short, but include some useful improvements.
Climax Studios and Housemarque have released the first update for Returnal. The patch released on February 17 requires 1.3 GB and brings various optimizations with it. Among other things, problems with Windows, widescreen monitors and PSN have been eliminated. The download should start automatically when Steam is opened. In addition, there will soon be a performance patch, as the developers reveal at the same time. This should take care of the stuttering that occurs more frequently with activated ray tracing.
February 17th Returnal Update patch notes
And here are the official patch notes, in addition to which there are probably some smaller optimizations hidden in the update:
- Fixed a rare issue where the music would stop during biome entry
- Fix for certain ultrawide monitor setups not being recognized in full screen mode
- Fix for incorrect Windows resolution detection on first boot
- Fix for grass draw distance in Epic Particle settings
- Fix for PSN login timeouts
- Fix for rounding errors in benchmark results
Returnalhas some minor problems on the PC, but overall is considered a very successful console port. This refers both to the easy control with mouse and keyboard and to the technical side of the game. Although the system requirements for the PC are quite challenging, Returnal for one port has been running pretty well on home computers since it was launched. Only the slowdowns in confusing action scenes with excessive use of ray tracing cloud the overall picture a little, but these could be eliminated with the next patch.
