Diablo 3: The Infernal Machine – Guide for your Hellfire Ring

With the Infernal Machines you open portals to another world with so-called overbosses in the Heretic's Refuge.

Diablo 3’s Infernal Machine is called the ultimate grind for a reason. Because if you decide to assemble the machine and thus the ring of hellfire, you can expect long farm rounds if you are not incredibly lucky with your loot.

After all, there is a fairly comfortable change with Diablo 3 (buy now €30.26 ): Reaper of Souls. From now on you will collect four keys, not just three as before. But you can decide which portal you open with an Infernal Machine to farm a specific item for the Hellfire Ring. Below you will find all the information that is important for farming in our guide to the Infernal Machine.

What are Infernal Machine and Hellfire Ring?

In New Tristram there is a hut behind Brother Malachi whose door you can break down to open the portal to the “Heretic’s Refuge”. If you use the portal, you end up in a room where you can use the Infernal Machine to open portals to other worlds. Two bosses await you in these worlds, which differ from world to world. And these have a chance to drop the crafting materials for the Hellfire Ring.

This ring is particularly sought after because it offers an experience point bonus. The Hellfire Ring can also offer other randomly rolled attributes. The ring is linked to the account and can only be worn by a hero individually, but you can also give the ring to one of the three companions, because you then also benefit from the bonus on experience points. Furthermore, the ring has no level restriction, which means you can wear it even with level 1 characters.

Hellfire Ring (level 60) and Hellfire Ring (level 70)

There are differences between the Hellfire Ring (level 60) and the Hellfire Ring (level 70). The Hellfire Ring (level 60) rolls with a primary attribute and four other random attributes, in addition to the 35 percent experience point bonus and the effect of sometimes firing an explosive orb of hellfire. The ring can only be crafted by Shen when he reaches level 10.

The Ring of Hellfire (level 70) provides a 45 percent experience point bonus, has a chance to summon a ring of fire that deals 200 percent weapon damage, and can be infused with five magical properties. The ring can only be crafted by Shen once the jeweler has reached level 12.

Infernal Engine (Level 60) and Infernal Engine (Level 70)

To craft the Infernal Machine (level 60), you need the Key of Destruction, the Key of Hatred, and the Key of Terror, as well as the Blueprint. The blueprint and key only drop from Keywardens between level 60 and 69, and on Torment difficulty. The Infernal Machine (level 60) can only be crafted by Haedrig once he has reached level 10. The Infernal Machine (level 60) opens random portals.

To craft the Infernal Machine (level 70) you need the Key of Bones, the Key of Gluttony, the Key of War and the Key of Evil, and the Blueprint. The blueprint and key only drop from Keywardens at level 70 and Torment difficulty. The Infernal Machine (level 70) can only be crafted by Haedrig once he has reached level 12. The Infernal Machine (level 70) can be assigned to a specific portal during crafting, i.e. the Bone, Gluttony, Evil and War portals to make the Hellfire Ring item farming more predictable.

The Key Keepers

In Act 1 through Act 4, there is a Keywarden in each level. These Key Wardens can drop a specific key for the Infernal Machine from Torment 1 onwards. If you’re lucky, you can get the blueprint from the fourth keykeeper, Nekarat. Depending on the Torment level, the chance that a Keywarden can drop a key increases:

  • Agony 1: 25 percent
  • Agony 2: 28 percent
  • Agony 3: 33 percent
  • Agony 4: 38 percent
  • Agony 5: 43 percent
  • Agony 6: 50 percent

You can find the Keykeepers in the following levels, it is best to use the adventure mode to quickly travel from one level to the next:

Keywarden Nekarat can be found in Act 4 on the first floor of the Silver Tower.

While Nekarat can drop a random key between levels 60 and 69, at level 70 he only drops the Key of Evil. All Keywardens are to be considered full-fledged opponents with special abilities, keep this in mind during your farming sessions. Despite the higher chance of getting a key on Torment 6, keep in mind that multiple runs on a Warden on Torment 1 can be more rewarding. Because of course a key keeper not only deals out more in the highest level of difficulty, but also has considerably more life energy, so that it takes some time to rivet him down.

The portals to the overbosses

The Infernal Engine (level 60) does not allow you to choose which portal to open when used, making farming certain materials for the Hellfire Ring extremely unpredictable. At least you can be sure that a portal cannot be opened a second time during a session.

Although you need four keys to craft an Infernal Machine at level 70, you can choose which portal the machine should open when assembling the contraption. In this way, the individual parts for the ring can be farmed in a targeted manner. Below you can see which bosses are waiting for you in which portals and which items they can drop. The probability that the materials for the Hellfire Ring can be looted are the same as for the keys.

portal Infernal Machine of Bones Infernal Machine of Gluttony Infernal Machine of Terror Infernal Machine of Evil
bosses Skeleton King & Maghda Rakanoth & Ghom Siegebreaker Beast & Zoltun Kull Diablo & three other bosses
Item Leoric’s regrets Vial of Decay idol of terror heart of evil

When you enter the portal of the Infernal Machine of Evil, Diablo will face you. At 75, 50 and 35 percent of his life energy he also brings one of the other bosses to his side.
