Minecraft: create your own server for free, how does it work?

In Minecraft you can set up a server yourself to gamble with your friends and it’s completely free. We’ll show you how it works and explain what you should pay attention to.

How to create your own server in Minecraft? To set up your own free server, you must first visit the official Minecraft website and download the latest “minecraft_server.1.XX.X.jar file” (via minecraft.net).

The X’s are just placeholders here and includes the latest Java version of Minecraft. You have to make sure that you download the same version of the server file that your Minecraft has.

Once you have downloaded the file, all you have to do is:

  • Create a folder where you will put all your server files
  • Now drag the downloaded .jar file into your folder
  • Now open the .jar file
    • If you do this, more files will be downloaded into your folder
  • Now open the eula.txt file
    • You have to edit this file and change eula=false to eula=true and then save it
      • By making these changes, you agree to the Eula Terms. You cannot create your server without this consent
  • Now open your .jar file again
    • More files will now be added to your folder
  • From then on you should have all the necessary files for your server in your folder
    • To edit your server, you just have to go into the “server.properties” file and adjust the necessary paragraphs.
  • So that you can now gamble on your server, all you have to do is keep the .jar file actively running
  • Now start your Java Minecraft and go to the menu item “Multiplayer”
    • If you only want to gamble with players in your WiFi radius, enter “localhost” under server address
      • This connects you immediately to your server
    • However, if you want players from a foreign network to join you, you must provide your IP address and enter it in the server address field
      • Be careful though, you should only give your IP address to people you trust

What do I have to consider with a private server? For private servers that you primarily want to use publicly, you need to know that it can be very dangerous to give your IP address to someone you don’t trust. In the worst case, they could do illegal things and impersonate you. So be aware of this and be careful who you give access to your server.

In addition, your own server limits you to many things:

  • You are responsible for the support yourself
  • You do not have any protection against DDoS
  • Server is only online when you are online

In a paid server, however, which is offered by external providers, you don’t have to worry about anything anymore. There is a service as well as protection against DDoS and even has a higher limit in terms of possible players.

Despite this, it is worth having your own server, especially if you want to make the land of blocks unsafe in a familiar but small group.

Are there also free, external servers? These are also available, we recommend the page for them minehut.com. In this you can create a server for free by following the instructions on the page. In addition, you can upgrade your RAM or CPU with money to ensure a better and more stable server.
