The Playstation 3 was released in Germany on March 23, 2007. Although two successor consoles have long since appeared, Sony continues to support the device with firmware updates. Version 4.90, which is supposed to improve system performance, was recently released. But it is also possible that Sony has only closed security gaps.

The PSN store on Playstation 3 was supposed to be closed in July 2021, but Sony reversed the decision just a month after the announcement. It is therefore still possible to buy games on the PS3 itself or to download apps such as those from Netflix. In 2012, the PS3 was the most used device for streaming movies and series on Netflix.

Among other things, the Playstation 3 is characterized by a complicated cell CPU that can perform calculations that are only performed by graphics processors these days. The PS3 was originally supposed to appear without a graphics processor, but this turned out to be unfeasible during development. The complicated architecture is one of the reasons why the PS4 and PS5 are not backward compatible with the PS3. Last year, the English-language YouTube channel DigitalFoundry made the effort to showcase all the PS3 games rendered in Full HD (1080p). You can find the link to the almost three-hour special in the sources.
