Red Dead Redemption 2: Dutch’s gang’s lost cash would be worth over $4.5 million today

Cash Rules Everything Around Me: Red Dead Redemption 2 is about cash.

Red Dead Redemption 2 revolves around the Blackwater massacre and the large amount of coal that is still hidden somewhere in the beginning. A failed heist by the Van der Linde gang had to end without the loot. So of course the Outlaws want to get the money back. Now a fan has calculated what the $ 150,000 from back then would be worth today.

No wonder the Van der Linde gang are desperate for the Blackwater loot back in RDR 2

That’s what it’s about: Before the actual plot of Red Dead Redemption 2, the Blackwater Heist took place. However, the grandiose went into the pants. Instead of fat loot, there were only a lot of dead and the gang members are hunted from now on. You can see more about the story here:

One of Dutch’s plans, the leader, is to get that money back somehow and sometime. We then deal with that for quite a while in Rockstar’s western epic – with mixed success.

That’s why it’s so important: At first glance and from today’s perspective, the sum doesn’t sound that big. While $150,000 is a lot of money, it’s not a sum that would have saved so many people. But wrong thought!

RDR2 takes place in 1899: Unfortunately, the online calculator does not go back further than 1913, but the result should be very similar. Maybe the money would be worth even more now, but so be it. The sum of $150,000 is mentioned in a game paper from Valentine about the robbery in Blackwater.

In January 1913 those $150,000 were definitely worth a lot more than they are today. Due to inflation, the value of money has decreased drastically. But fortunately there are various calculators on the internet like this one that a fan used.

Over 4.5 million! If we enter the total from that time into such an inflation adjuster calculator, a surprising result comes out. The $150,000 in 1913 equates to purchasing power of $4,579,132.65 in January 2023.

That sounds a lot more. It also makes it really impressive what it’s all about, how big the treasure is to be found in Blackwater. It’s now much easier to understand why Dutch, Arthur and the rest of the Van der Linde gang are so interested.

Of course, that doesn’t quite match the prices in Red Dead Redemption 2’s saloons and gun shops. In addition, such inflation calculators should of course be used with caution anyway. So maybe you shouldn’t take this all 100% seriously, but it gives us a good sense of the scale.

How much would you have guessed that would be worth today? What would you have done with that much money?
