Former Blizzard devs team up with industry veterans to create action RPGs
Anyone who has followed Blizzard’s fortunes over the past twelve years will certainly know the names of Jay Wilson (see picture above – Dawn of War, WoW, Diablo 3, Hearthstone, Starcraft 2, Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm) and Julian Love (WoW, Starcraft, Diablo 3, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, Diablo 4, Diablo Immortal). The two veterans have now teamed up with other experienced developers (who worked on Cyberpunk 2077, Gears of War, Dying Light, Space Marines, Dragon Age 2 and Kingdom Hearts, for example) to found the Gas Giant Games studio and on the other hand to develop a new action role-playing game.
Official announcement coming soon!
According to the official press release on the studio’s website the new project will be presented at the next Game Developer’s Conference, which will take place from March 20th to 24th, 2023 in San Francisco. But we can expect an action role-playing game with survival elements, which is based on a new IP and which is to be released for PC and consoles.
It is also known that the developers have been working on the project for two years. Jay Wilson promises”insane, visceral combat, immersive progression systems, and a unique survival experience – all in a new and original world that you’re sure to enjoy exploring.“Once the game has been officially announced, we will of course keep you informed.
So many studios with ex-Blizzard devs…
Now it’s pretty hard to keep track of all the studios founded by ex-Blizzard developers who spent years working on the major franchises Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo. At the beginning of March, for example, we only reported that the Blizzard North trio Phil Shenk, Peter Hu and Erich Schaefer flying the flag of Moon Beast Productions also wants to develop a new action role-playing game.
A whole squad of former Starcraft 2 developers would like to use the name again Frost Giant Studios are revolutionizing the RTS genre. The Announcing their debut album Stormgate was last year. And then of course there are the two studios from Dreamhaven (including Mike Morhaime, Jason Chayes, Dustin Browder, Ben Thompson, Chris Sigarty, Alan Dabiri, Eric Dodds) the Bonfire Studios (including Rob Pardo, Josh Mosquira, Min Kim, Nick Carpenter) and Second Dinner (Ben Brode, Yong Woo, Jomaro Kindred). Which studio will end up releasing the best games? What do you all mean?
