The Last of Us: Ellie’s Mom Prequel was almost in development

About Ellie’s past in The Last of Us and her parents is relatively little known. It would have looked almost different: According to Neil Druckmann, there was a Prequel about Ellie’s mother almost in development.

Druckmann, who is co-president at Naughty Dog and oversees The Last of Us, revealed this in an interview with the YouTube channel Kinda Funny. The conversation was about a scene from the HBO series that just ended, in which Ellie’s mother Anna is discussed. Druckmann mentions that there was already a more detailed story arc that should have been implemented in a video game.

The Last of Us: Prequel by an outside studio

Such a spin-off would have traveled even further back in time and would have focused on Anna, Ellie’s mother, as Druckmann did in another interview with Variety reveals However, this potential prequel would not have been created by Naughty Dog itself, but by an unspecified external studio.

“There was some stuff written for the mom and dad when we were talking to another game studio to possibly do a whole Anna game,” says Druckmann. The highlight should have been the scene from the series, which we will not describe in detail here for spoiler reasons. In the end, however, the cooperation did not materialize and the project was apparently pushed aside.

Druckmann did not reveal the reasons why it ultimately failed. Possibly one lifts this story also for one third part of The Last of Us, which is rumored to be in production already. So far, however, this has not been confirmed.

Naughty Dog’s next project is already set

What Naughty Dog sits apart from the multiplayer spin-off to The Last of Us is currently completely unclear – at least for the public. According to Druckmann’s statements in an interview with Kinda Funny, the decision for the next project at Sony’s flagship studio was made a long time ago, but of course he can’t reveal more at this point in time.

He leaves open whether it is The Last of Us 3. However, he is aware that many fans want to see a third part. “I can’t say what it is, but that’s the process we went through: we considered many different things and chose what we felt most like,” says Druckmann.

One thing is clear: it will not be a new Uncharted. Naughty Dog has finished with Nathan Drake’s story and will not be developing an Uncharted 5as Druckmann announced some time ago.
