Survey shows: Germans are optimists

How happy do Germans feel? What are the most important factors for a happy life? How can happiness be increased in everyday life?

Eurojackpot investigated these questions in a representative survey on the occasion of World Luck Day, which is celebrated on March 20th. *

Accordingly, happiness is a widespread feeling in Germany. Almost 43 percent of Germans often feel happy – at least four times a week, every day or even several times a day. Only four percent say they never feel happy.

Are young men the happiest?

More than half of the people who often feel happy are men (53 percent). In line with this, only 12 percent of men feel happy less than once a week, compared to just under 17 percent of women.

Also, the younger you are, the happier you are. Of the 18 to 24 year olds, 51 percent feel happy almost every day or several times a day. The age groups 25 to 34 and 55 to 65 years each account for 47 percent.

Relationships make you happy – especially women

Respondents state interpersonal relationships as the most important factor for a happy life: love, partnership, family and friends (41 percent). Health (34 percent), financial security (12 percent), free time and hobbies (7 percent) and career and success (5 percent) follow.

Interpersonal relationships are particularly important for women: almost 45 percent of the female respondents attribute the greatest importance to this factor. For the male respondents, on the other hand, it is just over 36 percent.

And how do the other happiness factors perform in a gender comparison? All are somewhat more important for men than for women: the difference is almost four percent for financial security, two percent for career and success, and almost one percent for leisure and hobbies.

Spending time with friends and family promotes happiness in everyday life

What do Germans do to promote their own happiness in everyday life? A clear majority of 58 percent rely on spending time with friends and family. 43 percent reward themselves with a wellness treatment, a shopping spree or good food. 36 percent do sports or pursue another hobby. 27 percent feel happier when they can help others. And 14 percent meditate to increase their happiness.

As with the happiness factors above, it is also shown here that the interpersonal aspect is more important to women than to men: 56 percent of those surveyed for whom friends and family have a happiness-enhancing effect are women. If you compare the different age groups instead of the genders, the highest value for “Family and friends” is found among the 55 to 65 year olds at 66 percent.

Even if no majority attaches great importance to the factor of financial security for a happy life – winners of the Eurojackpot lottery will definitely experience one or the other moment of happiness.
