Elden Ring: Rennala resembles an NPC from Dark Souls 3, and it’s definitely no coincidence
Rennala, the head of Raya Lucaria’s academy, has a very special ability: she can grant rebirth. That’s part of the story, but it’s also reflected in a game mechanic: we can reallocate our skill points in Elden Ring at Rennala. This is her most obvious similarity to Rosaria from Dark Souls 3. However, if you look closely, you will see other similarities, and a dataminer even finds evidence of a planned boss fight for Rosaria, which apparently was not fully developed.
More similarities than meets the eye
It’s all about this: A video from dataminer Zullie the Witch shows just how much Rennala and Rosaria actually have in common. First, Zullie explains that both mothers love “their unfortunate” children more than anything. In the case of Rosaria’s children, the term “unhappy” hardly needs any further explanation, because they are large maggots that move by crawling.
But while Rennala’s children look more or less like normal girls in Academy uniforms, in-game text reveals that those who receive their rebirth are weak and die young. The girls also crawl, are easy to kill, and shoot like maggots with magic.
Cradles hanging from the ceiling: A detail that probably only the most resourceful of fans would have noticed is that cradles hang from the ceiling in both rooms. In Rennala’s case, these even have a purpose: during the first phase of her boss fight, she revives her offspring in them before they fall on us. But even in Rosaria’s case, the children’s beds could originally have been more than just decoration.

Deleted Dark Souls 3 boss fight
As the video progresses, we learn that Rosaria wasn’t always planned to be the apathetic-looking NPC we now know her to be. As Zullie reveals, the modder Katalash found an event trigger called “Boss Battle BGM Rosaria”. If we had entered her room, at a certain point the fight would have started.
There is even a song in the game files that would have accompanied the fight. Was the concept for Rennala’s skirmish planned back then, just for Rosaria? Unfortunately, nothing remains of this juxtaposition, so we can only speculate.
For example, in the case of SnakeSoul, FromSoftware simply used unused content from Dark Souls 3 in the Elden Ring. In this case it was an enemy who found his way into the intermediate country.
What do you think of the matter? Do you think that Rennala is basically Rosaria 2.0 and do you like it when unused content is later incorporated into a game?
