The Long Dark – Episode Four: Fury, Then Silence is now available

We are beyond excited to share the latest installment of The long darkThe Wintermute story mode with today’s Xbox gamers. This is just one more milestone in a history of close collaboration between Hinterland and Xbox, dating back to the launch of The long darkPreview of the Xbox game in 2015.

At that time, The long dark It had already been a hit on PC, but we had no specific plans to bring the game to console yet. That changed during a call in late 2014 with the team at [email protected], when they shared their plans to offer an early access type program, a first for consoles. We were asked if we wanted to help launch this, and we joined in, determined to be among the first games available in this way on the console. And so with a little effort, in 26 days we went from not having any Xbox builds (at all) to working fine on the platform and through certification, ready for release.

This work culminated in our availability as one of the first two Xbox Game Preview launch titles at E3 2015! It was a great moment for our little studio to have a game mentioned at the Microsoft Media Event and demo on the show floor alongside huge giants from the first party like aura and Gears of warand the launch of the first day of E3.

A mysterious aurora in the sky appears to be interfering with anything electrical, and as a result, Mackenzie, Astrid, and everyone they know are struggling to survive the harsh winter and brutal wildlife, all without the human-created comforts we all take for granted. sitting. Episode four ups the ante by featuring a gang of bloodthirsty convicts, eager to make their mark on Great Bear and exploit these new circumstances. Will Mackenzie survive this new threat to continue her search for Astrid?

We call our stage the “Silent Apocalypse.” It is not your typical doomsday scenario with zombies, aliens, or supernatural beasts. Only humanity faces our overdependence on technology and the loss of skills and community that leaves us vulnerable when we find society turned upside down. Mother Nature is in charge and is neutral to your existence. This is an issue that, although we began to explore it years ago, has become unexpectedly relevant during the last 18 months of the COVID lockdown. Our greatest joy comes from hearing the players experience a sense of comfort and a thoughtful escape into the quiet nature of The long dark. That’s why we do the things we do: to deeply touch players.

With the release of Episode Four today, we turn our thoughts back to Episode Five and the conclusion of our Wintermute story mode, as well as ongoing plans to support Survival Mode in our quest to create the best survival game in the world.
