Rally Point Resources

At the beginning of the game, you will focus a lot on gathering resources, such as wood, food, stone, and gold. To help you quickly put the villagers to work collecting these resources, you can predetermine their allocation before they rush out of your Town Center using the rally points. upon these resources to get them to work quickly.

To do this, select your Town Center and then right-click on a particular resource location (a forest for lumber, animals / farms for food, a gold vein for gold, etc.). Any villager produced during this time, with that rally point selected, will automatically proceed to harvest that resource. Just make sure to update them to another resource location as needed.

When to grow old

You can pair this with the “Rally Point Resources” tip above, but it is a crucial component of the game. Age of Empires IV it is knowing how and when to grow old. Each Age comes with new units and buildings that allow you more strategic options, such as exchanging gold and resources with your allies or neutral trading posts through the Market (unlocked in the Feudal Age) or producing siege engines and units that will strike fear into the Hearts of your enemies from the Siege Workshop (Unlocked in Castle Age).

To grow old, you will need to meet a number of resource requirements in conjunction with building a Landmark or, in the case of the Abbasid dynasty, a wing of the House of Wisdom. Knowing what it takes to advance your empire is vitally important, and you can check this at any time from the tech tree or by selecting a villager and the “age icon” on the unit card. Innuendo: For most civilizations, food and gold are vital to get out of the Dark Ages.

To explore!

Information is knowledge. Knowledge is power. Power is everything. Do no underestimate the power of your Scout. Especially in the skirmish and multiplayer modes, where you get one for free (free!). It is incredibly important to use this unit early in the game to get a general layout of the terrain to find resource locations and determine strategic bottlenecks. Most importantly, while you’ve been building your empire, your opponent did the same: use your Scout to get an idea of where your opponent is on the map and what enemy production structures (and armies!) They are accumulating.

Scouts aren’t very powerful and should rarely (if ever) be used to fight enemies early in the game, but they are fantastic in a sheep herding (an excellent food source) to take to your village to help out. Early food collection. And it’s not just the sheep that are close. If you manage to sneak into enemy territory and snatch those herds from your opponent, it’s just one less advantage than you’re allowing them in terms of resource gathering up front.

The power of accountants

Once you’ve spent some time exploring, you may have a better understanding of how your opponent is trying to attack you. Whenever possible, try to create military production buildings that produce units that reliably counter those of your enemy. When you start building siege and special units and embarking on naval warfare, you will find a variety of creative strategies to employ, but when it comes to ground units, there are some basic principles of rock / paper / scissors mechanics that you should stick to. . in mind:

  • The archer counters the spearman
  • The spearman counters the cavalry
  • Archer cavalry counters

There is a lot to learn from there, but this helps to visualize the beginning Age IV the battles are built.

Queue of various buildings

Knowing your counters is one thing and assembling an army that will leave your opponent shaking in their boots is another. Once you’ve developed your economy, you might consider queuing multiple military buildings at once. This will ensure that you are producing units faster, as you increase your forces. We found it useful to take a single villager who can plot multiple archery positions, barracks, or stables so you can start queuing unit production more quickly.

Once built, double-left-click on the same building type (e.g. Barracks, Archery Range, etc.) to select each of that type, then start producing units. Additionally, while both buildings are being selected, you can upgrade your Rally Point as needed to reinforce a choke point or head to a stage while preparing for an upcoming battle.

Group assignments

By default, many of the function keys (F1, F2, etc.) on your keyboard can be used to quickly navigate to the locations of your village buildings, such as barracks, archery ranges, etc. But one thing we’ve found useful is assigning these buildings to a group so that your camera doesn’t zoom back to your village. This is especially useful since you are doing many tasks at the same time, usually in the middle of battle, and it is time to start replenishing your army in real time.

To do this, left-click on the unit-producing structure (also double-left-click to select all that building type), and then press Ctrl + 1-9 to assign that structure to a group along the row of numbers from your keyboard. By scrolling through these grouped structures, you will find that you can manage your construction queues at any time in your navigation bar without the camera focusing on your village, away from what you were managing on the screen (troops, scouts, etc.).
