I’d be forgiven for thinking that polishing, one of the new features introduced in Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Happy Home Paradise expansion (which is pretty complicated), seemed a bit … silly. After all, why would you want our furniture to shine?

We also thought the same when we first unlocked the ability to polish. During the early days (or house designs), the polish function did exactly that – it made things shine. And not necessarily want things to shine.

But after starting the design of our 12th house, we were given a Catalogue of polishing effects, and we put them to good use for this function. Here are all the polishing effects, plus a couple of ideas on how to use them!

How do I unlock the polish?

Once you’ve completed your 4th house, you’ll see a little scene in Happy Home Paradise about how Wardell loves to polish things up. During the fifth design of your home, Niko will teach you how to do it yourself!

What does polishing do?

Add effects to furniture! Whether it’s adding sparkle to something shiny or raindrops to something you want to make it look dripping, you can bring life to your homes and the homes of your villagers with polishing.

How to polish?

When inside a house – yours, your villagers’, or the vacation homes in Happy Home Paradise, you can press the L shoulder button to switch to polishing mode and put on your polishing gear.

From there, walk to the item you want to apply the effects to and press A, or hold down A to intensify the effect. Sometimes this makes more particles appear, and sometimes it just makes them bigger or faster.

How do I undo the polishing effect?

Just walk to the article again and press A or Y!

As you design your twelfth home layout (you get one letter after the tenth, so only two more after that), Niko will show you the remaining 13 polish effects for a total of 14.

What are the effects and what do they do?

There are 14 effects, each adding different particles to a piece of furniture of any size, from a cup of coffee to the Moon. Here they are all, as well as some suggestions on how to make them work for you!

Sparkleblast

Add little white sparkles to the item, which sparkle and shine like tiny little stars. Use it to make something look clean or magical, like a crystal ball or something gold.

Pitterpat

Makes little hearts appear and float from the item. You could use this to make an entire room. unbearably twee, if you’d like, or to surprise a loved one with a heart-shaped box of chocolates that has hearts popping out of it.

Dizzyspin

Makes the rotating blue spirals spin up and around the item. We are not really sure what it is for.

Spaceblip

Some kind of Star Trekky “carry me, Scotty” effect that makes things look like they’re vworped to a spaceship, or as if they were falling.

An effect that makes things drip with water. Use it in your rainy rooms or to make clothes look like they’re drying out.

Fuzzybubs

This gives things a “bokeh” effect, which has the result of making something look very, very pretty. Honestly, everything looks good with a fuzzybubs effect.
