Epic Games is introducing a new breed of kid-friendly accounts

Epic Games is introducing a new kid-friendly type of user account designed to offer young gamers a “safe and inclusive” experience while playing titles like Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League. Epic would like to ask all gamers around the world their age when logging into the Epic Games Store or any of the company’s games. Players under the age of 13 will have their accounts automatically converted to a restricted account. These players will then be asked to provide a parent or legal guardian’s email address to begin the “Parental Consent Process”.

Fortnite is now available with parental controls

the restricted accounts disable some features such as voice and text chat, games and DLCs can no longer be purchased, and games not owned by Epic Games themselves can no longer be easily downloaded. Additionally, these users are not allowed to link their Epic account to other things like Facebook and Twitch. Most of these features can be re-enabled through parental controls.

Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys will continue to play without issues, but limited account users may not use the game’s chats or purchase a Battle Pass unless specifically authorized by a parent or guardian. Epic themselves write about their new type of account, they should “Provide a safe, inclusive experience tailored for young players while still allowing access to popular gameplay in games like Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League.”
