Current developments in the hardware market
January 25, 2023: On the gaming graphics card side, there are three valid manufacturers, because in addition to the well-known GPU giants Nvidia and AMD, Intel has also been joining them since 2022 with the Arc series. Nvidia is currently making headlines with the new Ada Lovelace generation, thanks to the Geforce RTX 4090 24 GiB, the RTX 4080 16 GiB and the RTX 4070 Ti 12 GiB. The extremely high-performance GPUs are primarily aimed at demanding users and enthusiasts with prices of up to 1,890 euros – in addition to significantly more powerful ray tracing performance, Nvidia also relies on the so-called frame generation within the third iteration of DLSS upsampling. Meanwhile, AMD is launching the new Radeon RX 7000 series cards, starting with the RX 7900 XTX 24 GiB and the cheaper XT variant with 20 GiB. At Nvidia, the previous generation Ampere remains in the stable and relatively high price range (about the RTX 3080 10 GiB for about 799 euros), while AMD’s RX 6000 series GPUs are comparatively pleasantly priced and serve well as price-performance tips (e.g. the RX 6800 XT 16 GiB for 680 euros or the RX 6700 XT 12 GiB for about 400 euros).
Due to the high pricing, however, the newer Nvidia cards are more common than years before. Private gamers are much less willing to spend four-digit sums for GPUs in the masses and since the Ethereum merger graphics cards are no longer a profitable means to an end for crypto miners.
Intel offers the processors Raptor Lake and AMD with Ryzen 7000 currently a high-performance new offer in the clock range of partly over 5.0 GHz. With Intel’s Alder or Raptor Lake, the memory generation can still be selected by selecting the mainboard version, with AMD’s Zen 4, on the other hand, only DDR5 bars are possible instead of DDR4 kits. Both circuit board bases would have it in price, but with Raptor Lake you can save even more older Socket 1700 boards than with the AM5 motherboards with a new socket. The upcoming Ryzen 7000X3D processors with high-performance 3D V-Cache can be interesting for gamers, because the popular predecessor Ryzen 7 5800X3D was particularly positive in terms of performance and efficiency in games.
