Islanders Console Edition, the minimalist city builder from developer Grizzly Games, is heading to Switch … right now!

Yes, as revealed in today’s Indie World Showcase, publisher Coatsink has removed the relaxing game of 2019 on the Switch eShop and it is available to buy while reading these very words for the reasonable price of £ 4.49 / $ 4.99 / € 4.99. It’s coming to PS4 and Xbox One on August 26, but Switch owners have their first chance to test out the console version.

If you’re unfamiliar with islanders, or islanders if you want all the caps to shout it out, it’s a very laid-back procedurally generated city builder where you create villages in the game’s rugged landscapes, with coastlines, cliffs, snowy mountains. , parched deserts, grass … you know, all terrestrial biomes. Ergonomic construction will earn you points as you work towards a goal that unlocks bigger and better items to build and expand your island metropolis.

Ahead of the game’s Switch announcement, the Grizzly Games team gave Nintendo Life some exclusive feedback on this relaxing puzzle, its journey to Switch, and how the feeling of seeing the game appear in a Nintendo Indie World Showcase …

Introduction and roles of the Grizzly Games team on this console port:

We are Jonas, Friedemann and Paul, also known as Grizzly Games. For ISLANDERS Console Edition, we added new content to the game, such as new island types and color schemes. On the technical side, the amazing folks at Coatsink took it upon themselves to bring the original game to the Switch platform.

On what players can expect to enjoy in Console Edition:

What makes ISLANDERS Console Edition stand out compared to other city builders is its extreme simplicity. The gameplay consists of planning and optimizing the design of your city. There is no resource management, no skill trees or unnecessary nonsense, which is why some players describe it as the “Tetris” of city builders.

On the game’s initial inspirations:

We loved the vibe of classic city builders like ANNO or SimCity and we thought it would be great to have a scaled-down version of that for shorter gaming sessions.

On the excitement of appearing at the Indie World Showcase:

On a scale from zero to Christmas Eve, very close to Christmas Eve. Seeing ISLANDERS Console Edition on Switch is something we’ve always dreamed of.

On how the game fits in well with the Switch:

ISLANDERS Console Edition is a welcoming, beautiful and accessible game that invites everyone to build the city of their dreams on a remote island. It’s a great game to kick back with a relaxed gaming session at the end of the day and we think the Switch is the perfect console for that, because it allows you to take the game with you wherever you want.

While we really hope someone will be able to play ISLANDERS Console Edition one day on a desert island under a palm tree, we are personally very excited to play it on our couch or on the train.

On the challenges of balancing the small handheld screen and the docked gaming experience:

ISLANDERS Console Edition has only a minimal UI, so it helped because icons and other UI elements generally create the biggest challenges in this regard. The wonderful people who took care of portability at Coatsink did an excellent job adapting everything that needed to be altered to work on the small screen and we think the game works perfectly on both scales.

On where the islanders rank on a scale of 1 to 10 from ‘Chill’:

We say 12, but we could be a bit biased on this. It’s great that you can play ISLANDERS Console Edition wherever you want now!

Islanders Console Edition is now available on the Switch eShop. Let us know if you’re up for the city with a comment below.
