With the launch of Metroid Dread fast approaching, can you believe it’s only seven weeks away? – Nintendo has released the latest of their special reports offering deep dives into the game’s history, mechanics, and more, as well as a new trailer (which you can see above).
This time, we will learn more about Samus’ abilities and the weapons that she will be able to use to fight her last deadly enemies. Fans of the series will be familiar with Samus’ Beam Attacks and Missiles, but techniques like the Melee Counter, which was first introduced in Metroid: Samus Returns on 3DS, have been tweaked for this new adventure.
Check it out:
ARM CANNON
Samus’ right arm is fully integrated with her powerful and iconic Arm Cannon, which can fire two types of weapons: fast beam strikes and powerful missiles. Because the Arm Cannon is so deeply integrated, Samus can switch between weapon classes at will.
In the Metroid Dread game, you can attack from almost any angle while running, jumping or clinging to certain walls and ledges.
Beam attacks
The lightning strike is Samus’ offensive ability. Acquiring upgrades can modify its power and properties, such as increasing the spread of the attack or adding other functions.
One such functional upgrade is the Grapple Beam, which gives it a string-like quality that makes the Arm Cannon capable of connecting to specific points. Once connected, Samus can tow objects or swing into parts of the environment that would otherwise be unreachable.
Missiles
Unlike the endless wave of lightning at her disposal, Samus has a capacity limit for this compact but powerful heavy weapon. It can also be improved with skill upgrades. Samus can increase his missile capacity, thus being able to hold more, acquiring Missile Tanks and Missile + Tanks scattered all over the world. Search diligently!
ACTIONS AND SKILLS
Melee counter
This action creates an opportunity for Samus to stun an enemy by hitting him just as he is about to attack. If successful, the stunned enemy is open to receiving a powerful follow-up attack. Samus can also Dash Counter while running.
Morph ball
The player can drop Samus into Morph Ball form by tilting the left joystick down while crouching, the same way it has always been done in the 2D Metroid series, and now also simply by pressing the ZL button. Samus will also automatically take Morph Ball form when jumping into an elevated tunnel.
Jumps
Samus’ unmatched physical abilities elevate her jumping actions to another level. One of those actions is wall jumping, where you can jump and kick against a wall to climb even higher.
Their jumping abilities can also be improved through skill upgrades. For example, the new Spin Boost ability allows Samus to jump a second time while spinning through the air.
Aeion abilities
Samus can harness a special mystical energy called Aeion to temporarily use certain abilities.
One of those abilities is Phantom Cloak, which covers her in optical camouflage to make her invisible. Using this while standing will slowly deplete your Aeion Energy pool; She can also move while cloaked, but costs a higher amount of Aeion Energy. When not in use, your reservation automatically regenerates over time.
POWER SUIT
The Power Suit that Samus wears is based on Chozo technology and was created specifically for her.
The addition of capacity enhancements can extend the functionality of the Power Suit’s performance and the Arm Cannon’s functions.
In addition to the Power Suit’s built-in defenses, Samus can increase her Energy, and therefore her ability to resist damage, by acquiring two types of Energy Tank items. Standard Energy Tanks increase your suit’s energy by 100 each. You can also collect four Energy Parts to rebuild the same functionality as a standard Energy Tank.
IMMUNITY TO THE X PARASITE
The Metroids were created to be the natural enemy of the X parasite.
Upon receiving an emergency dose of the “Metroid vaccine,” created from a cell culture previously obtained from Metroid’s brood, Samus became the only living creature that cannot be harmed by the X parasite.
Due to his immunity, only Samus is sent to the planet ZDR to investigate the possible presence of the X parasite, a life form believed to have been eradicated.
Previous reports have looked at the history of the franchise, EMMI’s mortal enemy, and the defining points of the series’ 2D saga. If you want to catch up on the Metroid series before visiting Dread this October, be sure to read our guide on what games you need to play.
