Quick Beats: Celeste Songwriter Lena Raine Talks About Her Love For Ghibli, Hurdy-Gurdies And Her Cat
[ad_1]
Throughout the Nintendo Life Video Game Music Festival, we’ll be speaking to a variety of songwriters and musicians with a mix of in-depth interviews and shorter, sharper (and perhaps a little dumber) Q&A in which we just do ten quick personal questions. ; We call these shorter functions “Quick Beats.”
Today’s interviewee is songwriter and performer Lena Raine, whose lovely music can be found in games like Celeste, Minecraft, Chicory: a colorful taleand the next Earthblade.
Read on to discover Lena’s (slightly) embarrassing first album, her favorite piece she’s ever written, and most importantly, a photo of her. very cute cat.
Nintendo Life: What was the first song or album you remember buying?
Lena Raine: Oh no, it’s embarrassing. I took my dad to the record store to buy Dookie from Green DayNot because I wanted that album, but because I had heard a song on the radio that I liked. The song was actually It’s the end of the REM worldbut the DJ read the song titles messy so I thought it was from Green Day. I hadn’t heard much of them before, but that’s what I wrote, so we put the tape in the car on the way home and it wasn’t 100% REM. Anyway, I still liked the album.
What was the last music you listened to?
I just put on the Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind soundtrack upon waking up yesterday. It’s amazing how well it still holds up and inspires other songwriters (myself included).
What was the first video game you wrote music for and how do you feel listening to it now?
The first game I wrote music for was a little RPG Maker experiment I did in high school. It was a typical JRPG city with a day / night cycle so I wrote a bunch of variations for the music if you came back at different times. Honestly, it amuses me that I was already taking those things into consideration in the early 2000s.
Which piece of yours are you most proud of?
Now? The mountain’s top from Chicory. I always wanted to write a vocal song for the credits of a game, and Emi Evans sang it very well.
What piece by someone else would you have liked to have written?
– (ISOLEUCINE) – from 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim by Yoshimi Kudo. It’s everything a piece of gaming music should be.
What do you listen to while driving?
I do not drive!
Do you have a musical hero?
It’s a three-way tie between Yoko Kanno, Chick Corea and Stevie Wonder.
Which decade had the best music?
I think dividing music by decades is silly.
Ocarina, harp or bongos: what magical instrument do you embark on an epic adventure?
Can I have a hurdy-gurdy? I think that would do some really weird magic for me to be into.
If your house caught fire and you only had time to grab a memory before fleeing to safety with your family, what would you take with you?
Can it be something alive? I would make sure to carry my cat Bobbin in his carrier because he would die for that love.
Our thanks to Lena for speaking with us. You can follow her on Twitter, listen to his music on YouTube and Band campAnd be sure to check out our other Nintendo Life VGM Fest articles in our ongoing season of interviews and musical features.
