Tomorrow Corporation Becomes Publisher With Star Trek Adventure ‘The Captain’ – Feature
[ad_1]
Tomorrow Corporation is a studio and team familiar to many independent game fans. Back in the ‘2D Boy’ days, key members produced the brilliant World of Goo, one of the first parts of the Wii Store download revolution. Since Tomorrow Corporation (comprised of Allan Blomquist, Kyle Gabler, and Kyle Gray) was formed, there have been three titles, all of which have graced Nintendo hardware: Little Inferno, Human Resource Machine, and 7 Billion Humans. Their games have a distinctive style and clever design, so it makes sense that the studio’s first step toward publishing would be for an equally eye-catching title.
Tomorrow Corporation is entering game publishing with Captain, a title developed by the Swedish team Sysiac Games, a two-person studio by Peter Hedin and Benny Eriksson. It’s a point-and-click adventure that promises a series of ‘mini-adventures and multiple endings’; For Star Trek fans, its story format may seem familiar, though it evidently packs a heavy dose of parody and humor.
You play as Thomas Welmu, a 35-year-old captain of the space fleet. In the year 3300, war breaks out with ‘The Union’ and, in an attempt to mount a new type of defense, you are thrown into the middle of the galaxy.
Now you have to get back to your family before the dreaded ‘Sunblaster’ reaches Earth and destroys the sun.
The only problem is that the space around you is full of mindless people, aliens, droids, and other weird things that seem to want nothing more than for you to fail.
It’ll be a welcome addition when venturing into the Switch, and we sent some questions to Tomorrow Corporation’s Kyle Gray to learn a bit about how the company ended up publishing and to learn more about developer Sysiac Games …
What was the main motivation for the Tomorrow Corporation team to pursue publishing?
Sysiac Games has created such a beautiful and fun point and click sci-fi adventure game in Captain, which when Kyle saw it as part of the Indie Fund gave me two alternatives: Either we go back in time and take out developers like Terminator and then we make the game ourselves, or we publish it.
When Kyle saw it as part of the Indie Fund, he gave me two alternatives: either we go back in time and weed out developers like Terminator and then we make the game ourselves, or we publish it.
Since time travel is not entirely reliable yet, we decided to help out and post it.
Your own developed games have such a distinctive style, do you expect to have an equally strong identity as a publisher as well?
We would consider only posting projects that look like something we would have liked to create ourselves. We’re notoriously picky, which is why The Captain is currently the only title we’re releasing on the horizon. We may never find another perfect match, and we agree with that. If you know of a developer who is creating a wonderful game that looks like something Tomorrow Corporation would do, with great art and a sense of humor, please let us know.
What specific qualities drew you to The Captain? And it is Development team?
We were seduced by the Captain’s dry Swedish sense of humor and incredible art style. And then we were even more seduced by the great duo of two men, Benny and Peter. The two boys live in a small town on the outskirts of Stockholm and have been playing games together since they were children, over 30 years ago.
Peter lives on a farm, so we often hear the sounds of horses and other animals while talking on the phone.
Like his 30-second elevator pitch to The CaptainWhat should Switch owners expect from this game?
You are the captain of a small spaceship lost in space and you have to find your way home through the galaxy. Along the way, you will find dozens of adventures, each with multiple endings. You will collect friends to accompany you on your trip. You will make enemies. You can’t save everyone. Who will you leave behind? Will you destroy a civilization for a chance to get home faster? Dozens of multiple endings support all of these difficult decisions. It all depends on you, you are the Captain!
We look forward to seeing more of The Captain in the weeks and months to come, and we want to thank Kyle Gray for his time. Let us know what you think of him in the comments!
