Bungie Interview: Destiny 2 Weapon Crafting Won’t Be Like Other MMOs

Weapon making will finally enter the Destiny universe in Destiny 2: The Witch Queen on February 22, 2022. Bungie hasn’t released much information about this system yet, but we spoke to Destiny 2 Game Director Joe Blackburn and General Manager Justin Truman on how weapon crafting works, what it brings to Destiny, and the benefits of the exclusive weapon to craft: the Glaive.

At last week’s Destiny Showcase, Bungie representatives referred to the crafting system as “combat-based,” but never gave a more detailed explanation. In the original Destiny, weapons would drop for players with locked perks, and players would defeat enemies and spend resources to unlock a weapon’s full potential. Bungie’s description got us wondering Destiny 2The crafting would follow a similar situation, but as usual, the studio doesn’t just want to repeat the past.

“This is definitely a deeper system than any other we had in [the original Destiny]”Blackburn said. “We really want you to feel like you are building a bond with whatever you are passionate about.”

While Blackburn and Truman would not paint a clear picture of gun making, other than how I would not do it work: we talked a little more in depth about the new type of glaive weapon, which will come in legendary and exotic versions. The glaive is a spear that has three weapons in one: it protects, shoots and stabs. It is a weapon of multiple firsts for Destiny, being the first crafting-only weapon and the only first-person melee weapon (as opposed to swords and relic-type weapons that take the player to a third-person perspective).

The glaive differs not only in its acquisition and camera perspective, but also in its ammunition type and flexibility. “We’ve had melee combat before, but this is also in the energy and it’s special, like, this is a green ammo weapon,” Blackburn said, contrasting the heavy ammo players need to deal damage with swords. “We have not had this style. […] Even if you run out of ammo [with the glaive], you can stab something. Even if you need to recharge, you can stab something. […] I think the first time someone picks a glaive and they put Swashbuckler on it, they say, ‘Oh, oh, then I won’t reload. I’ll just stab things and shoot forever. ‘

Blackburn wouldn’t go into a detailed description of how the glaive works, but that quote does give us some interesting clues. Players will first need to recharge their glaive for one reason or another, be it to fire the energy blast, use the shield, or some other unknown purpose. And glaives will have a broader influence on your gear, as ammo is only needed for one aspect of the weapon, and players focused on melee seemingly don’t need ammo at all.

Blackburn also suggests that players can directly place an advantage like Swashbuckler on a glaive with the crafting system. Swashbuckler offers bonus damage stacks on kills, maxing out those stacks immediately after a melee kill, making the buff ideal for a weapon like the glaive. This lends credence to the idea that players will be able to directly select certain perks for their weapons through the crafting system.

As for why players would use a glaive over other weapons, especially on difficult content, Blackburn spoke about its main benefit: the invasion. “We see this as a weapon that really allows you to invade the camps,” Blackburn said. “You can imagine something like, ‘Oh my God, a hive guardian just died, his ghost is back there. There’s a Shrieker in the back, I don’t have time to kill the Shrieker. ‘ Then you pop the [Glaive] Put on your shield and walk towards the Ghost and crush the Ghost. “

As a ranged weapon, the glaive lives in the short to medium range category, and the developers used the phrase “y-fusion rifle” to describe it, rather than the short-range shotgun. Between its melee prowess, its ranged blast, and its shield, the Glaive is all about being the Swiss Army Knife with long, pointed sticks. It offers the ability to quickly melee enemies while low on ammo, blast powerful enemies to pieces from range, and use the shield to protect yourself while resurrecting a friend in some of the game’s toughest content.

As for the Crucible, Blackburn assured us that “the team has made some very smart decisions in PvP.” Bungie doesn’t want players to have immediate access to the shield, allowing them to defend themselves from attacks immediately when they appear with special ammo. The duo didn’t go into detail about how the team is solving that problem, just that it’s something everyone has thought about and has a solution.

Outside of the utility of the glaive and how players will put it together, Blackburn seemed more excited by how it looks on players’ backs. “You see people walking around the Tower and it looks like they are coming out of a Knight’s tale or something because they have this huge thing stuck to their back, ”Blackburn said. With some of Destiny 2The bows already span the length of their Guardians, we will spend the next six months vividly imagining how the Glaives will surpass their medieval cousins.
