Marvel’s Midnight Suns combat uses a card system, but will not have loot boxes [Update]

To update: Ever since the tactical card battle system was introduced in Marvel’s Midnight Suns, some players have raised concerns that there may be loot boxes in the game.

However, the developers have confirmed that there are no loot boxes in Midnight Suns, nor any microtransactions related to the card system. However, there will be purely cosmetic skins that will be available for purchase, but will not affect the balance of the game.

Midnight Suns Creative Director Jake Solomon also responded to player concerns, telling IGN: “We knew we were swimming deep water with this one.” However, Solomon says the card system is “easily as tactical as XCOM,” though he understands the confusion. Apparently more gameplay will be revealed next Tuesday.

Original Story: Marvel’s Midnight Suns is Marvel’s next great superhero game, but with a tactical twist. In a new reveal of the game, developer Firaxis shared more about the card-based strategy combat system that players will use to fight the battle with Lilith.

Midnight Suns is being developed by the creators of XCOM at Firaxis, the strategic combat system might not come as much of a surprise. But in addition to turn-based combat, players will also use the environment, team composition, and a random variety of skill cards.

As revealed in today’s game tutorial, combat in Midnight Suns involves choosing three heroes and using a deck of random skill cards. Your abilities are tied to these cards, and because each “hand” is random at the beginning of a battle, you will have to think strategically to get results. These cards can also be upgraded as you progress through the game.

This is not a card game like Hearthstone, but rather something similar to rogues using card abilities like Slay the Spire.

Players can use these skill cards in conjunction with the environment to deal massive damage to enemies as well. Shoot your enemy into nearby gas tanks or even off the ledge to quickly clear the field of baddies when you’re in a pinch.

You can also coordinate team attacks if you have the right heroes with you. Improving your relationship with these characters during the social segments of Midnight Suns will also improve your team skills.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns Screens

As revealed during Gamescom ONL, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a darker version of the Marvel universe with an emphasis on its more supernatural side. You will play as an original Marvel hero that you can fully customize and fight and live alongside famous Marvel heroes. While you will be able to socialize with them, unfortunately, you cannot date anyone.
