EShop select

August was quite an interesting month for the delights of the eShop, with many titles absolutely worth your time.

These awards aim to celebrate the best of Nintendo’s digital store, giving a little love and attention to games that could so easily get lost in Switch’s ever-growing library.

Then let’s get started. Here are the best Switch eShop games of August 2021!

Honorable mentions:

While these titles didn’t make the top three this month, they’re certainly worth checking out:

Editor: Labs function selector / Developer: Labs function selector

Release date: August 12, 2021 (USA) / August 12, 2021 (UK / EU)

Taking third place this month is the art of rally, an abstract version of the top-down rally that is sure to make you jump race after race.

The visual deficiencies present on the Switch are certainly an embarrassment compared to other versions, but the gameplay itself is challenging, feels authentic, and is enhanced by the overall artistic vision of the game. With plenty of optional tracks, cars, and objectives to enjoy, it’s worth checking out if you can overcome some of the performance shortcomings of the Switch version. We gave this a very strong 8/10 in our review, and it has been beating the NL team ever since.

Quake (Switch eShop)Quake (Switch eShop)

Editor: Bethesda / Developer: identification software

Release date: August 19, 2021 (USA) / August 19, 2021 (UK / EU)

Second is the new re-release of Quake, the definitive version of an iconic first-person shooter.

We described this as “a star port of one of the true greats of games and an absolutely essential addition to your Switch library” in our review. Oh, did we mention we gave it an amazing 10/10? Yes, It’s so good.

This is a super slick remaster that features flawless 60fps action, tons of content, and a host of online and co-op options. If you’ve never played Quake before, or if you like the sound of playing a super difficult version of the game that you once loved, you have to download it.

Axiom Verge 2 (Switch eShop)Axiom Verge 2 (Switch eShop)

Editor: Thomas Happ games / Developer: Thomas Happ games

Release date: August 11, 2021 (USA) / August 11, 2021 (UK / EU)

Very strictly (and we mean very narrowly) beating Quake for our top spot this month, however, is Axiom Verge 2.

We’re always ready to try some good Metroidvania here at Nintendo Life, and Axiom Verge’s games are up there with some of the best the genre has to offer. We’re happy to report that Axiom Verge 2 is a worthy follow-up to the original that perfectly balances the familiar elements that made that first game great, and fresh ideas that give the sequel its own identity.

With a huge world to explore, fast-paced gameplay, and a mysterious and appropriate atmosphere to absorb, Metroidvania fans owe it to themselves to see this one. What month, huh?

How we decide our eShop selects the first three: As we reach the end of each month, the Nintendo Life staff vote on their favorite titles from a list of games selected by the editorial team. To qualify for this list, these games must have been released as a digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop title in that particular month, and they must have been reviewed in Nintendo Life; We select the ranking games based on their review scores.

Staff are then asked to vote for three games that they think deserve to be at the top of that list; the first option gets 3 points, the second option gets 2 points and the third option gets 1 point. These votes are then counted to create a top three list, with the overall winner taking the top prize for that month.
