Thanos ‘connection to the Eternals and Harry Styles’ ties to Eros, explained

With Eternal, The MCU moves to a more cosmic focus, away from Thanos and onto a new set of galactic weirdos, including Celestials.

But in the Marvel comics, Thanos and the Eternals have a strong connection that may chart a new course for the next phase of Marvel movies. After a Eternal The post-credits scene quietly invoked the connection, let’s talk about how Thanos relates to Phase 4, even after his story seemingly ended.

[Ed. note: This piece contains spoilers for Marvel’s Eternals.]

Thanos’ Eternals bloodline

Thanos

Wonderful

In the comics, Thanos is an Eternal, and one of a very important lineage: his father, Al’ars, was the son of Kronos, who ruled the Eternals of Earth after a civil war that divided the original colony. After the death of his father, Al’ars traveled the universe as a Mentor.

This led him to Titan, the moon of Saturn, and his own group of Eternals. There, he discovered that the entire planet had been decimated in its own eternal civil war with one survivor: the Eternal Titan Sui-san. Using a genetic device, the two rebuilt Titan and repopulated it with new Eternal-like beings called Titans; they were stronger and could outlive the original Titan Eternals, but were still outmatched by the Earth Eternals.

Eventually, Sui-San and Al’ars had two children of their own: Eros (we’ll get to him) and Thanos.

He is not an Eternal, he is not a Deviant yet

Thanos is an Eternal, yes, but he’s also a Deviant. Why? Because genetics!

See, Eternals and Deviants are made from the same batch, and that means there will eventually be some crossover. An Eternal who had a Deviant-like mutation was later nicknamed “Deviant Syndrome”, or the way Thanos looks with his purple skin and striated chin. (Of the two sons, he is the only one with this condition; Eros seems like a normal Eternal, something Thanos naturally hated his brother for.) And because the Deviants’ evil is tied to their biology (ouch!), Thanos’s appearance went berserk. Sui-san so much that when she saw him for the first time after giving birth, she went crazy and tried to kill him (ouch too!).

In the stream Eternal Led by Kieron Gillen and Esad Ribić, the genius Phastos discovered that Thanos is actually a “true Eternal”, just like the rest of them. It is unclear what this means for the character in the future; Gillen and Ribić’s next career arc will continue the Thanos story, where he will be known as “Eternal Prime. ”

Let’s talk about eros

Created by Jim Starlin and first appeared in 1973 Invincible Iron Man # 55, Eros is the younger brother of Thanos. With good looks and the power to control other people’s emotions, Eros is both the superhero named Starfox and a huge son of a bitch. If he wasn’t helping the Avengers with a crisis, he was being hedonistic as hell in space.

Like many fictional siblings, the two don’t like each other, and Thanos often just captures and torments Eros. Sometimes they get along: they once had to work together to defeat Thanos’ future self, and they have a truce to meet once a year and bring gifts to each other.

What does this mean for the MCU?

Eternal ‘ The first post-credits scene shows Thena, Makkari, and Druig on their ship just as they realize that Sersi, Phastos, Kingo, and Sprite have been captured by the Celestial Arishem. Before they can formulate a plan, they are interrupted by none other than Eros, played by Harry Styles. Explicitly introduced as Thanos’ brother by his partner Pip (Patton Oswalt), Eros offers to help the Eternals save their friends. And his shitty nature seems to be intact, as his intro is set to “It feels like the first timeAnd flirt with Thena.

Since the movie ends with the standard promise of “Eternals will return …”, Eros is probably included in that now as well. If this movie is successful, Styles may be blocked by a Eternals 2, and maybe even your own movie or show. (Surely his absence from the entire Infinity Saga is substantial enough for either of them.) How he connects with the Celestials and their overall purpose in the MCU, as well as whether Thanos will appear again for another Marvel sibling fight. Either way, the Eternals have a new ally against the Celestials. One that will undoubtedly end up causing problems for them.
