Everything we know about Battlefield 2042

Following the 2018 WWII epic Battlefield V, Dice is abandoning the past and looking to the very near future. Battlefield 2042 will launch players into massive skirmishes set in a tumultuous world ravaged by one of our greatest existential threats today: climate change. What does Dice have in store for Battlefield’s grand return to the modern era? Here is everything you need to know about this long-awaited shooting game.

What’s different from previous Battlefield games?

Unlike the last handful of entries in the series, Battlefield 2042 is returning to the roots of the franchise with a fully multiplayer experience. DICE has given up on the single-player campaign and is opting to deliver all of its narrative threads across the various multiplayer components such as individual maps and specialists that you will play as in battle.

What’s the story behind Battlefield 2042?

A planet already haunted by the effects of climate change finds itself in wartime after a series of calamities shatters any semblance of peace. Satellites littering Earth’s atmosphere are victims of an event known as the “Kessler Effect,” where critical mass of machinery collides with each other, creating a cascading torrent of destruction. With more than 70% of the planet’s satellites missing, communication and location systems are largely down. Due to tensions in the supply chain, Russia and the US are caught in a growing skirmish for food and resources. Increasingly fierce storms and general weather conditions have forced displaced people called No-Pats to choose a side in the conflict.

What are the returning multiplayer modes?

Dice is bringing back the popular Conquest and Breakthrough multiplayer modes, which together make up the mainstay of the All-Out Warfare pack. Conquest, a sandbox conflict where large teams battle each other to take over territory, will now support 128 players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S and PC, with the numbers halved on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Breakthrough will return to have an attacking team advancing through one of the massive 2042 maps, while the defensive squad must hold their line and keep the attackers out.

How many maps can we expect?

Locations and maps can be the heart and soul of any FPS experience, and Battlefield 2042 looks to introduce a handful of new favorites while reliving some classics. DICE has prepared 13 maps for release with seven new locations and six returning maps from the Battlefield past.

The new maps include Orbital, a site in French Guiana that has players fighting around a rocket launch, Discarded, a dismantled Indian shipyard, and Hourglass, a Qatari city ravaged by sandstorms.

Returning maps include representatives from the entire Battlefield timeline that may only be available in the game’s Portal mode. 1942’s Battle of the Bulge is here along with Bad Company 2’s Arica Harbor, Battlefield 3’s Noshahar Channel, and more. Each of these classic maps has been remastered with new art assets.

Why should I get excited about Portal?

Portal, the second of the three pillars of the 2042 experience, allows players to create their own Battlefield scenarios using maps, weapons, vehicles, and equipment from across the series’ history. You can even form asymmetrical teams with armories from various eras and create new victory conditions to animate large team skirmishes. Want to recreate a WWII squad with the only technology available at the time and pit them against modern operators? That’s possible! How about giving everyone just knives and sniper rifles on a Bad Company 2 map? That is also a choice you can make. Portal features a logic editor, custom modes, and other settings to modify to create unique conflicts that are not normally possible in standard 2042 matches.

What’s happening in the new Hazard Zone mode?

Your goal in Hazard Zone is simple: navigate a 2042 map as a team of four specialists, recover valuable data units, and get away with their lives. Complications come with all the other groups in the area pursuing the same goals. There are no guaranteed respawns in the Hazard Zone, so once you’re down, your team will most likely be a vital member of the party. If you manage to mine the map with the important information in hand, you will earn XP and Dark Market credits, giving your team a better team to do the subsequent extraction in the Hazard Zone. The more information you collect, the better your rewards will be. However, the longer you stay on a given map, the greater the risk that you won’t make it out alive to reap the sweet rewards.

Who are the specialists and do they replace the traditional classes?

Forgoing traditional class-based charges, 2042 features specialists. These are characters that you will be playing that look like classes you may be familiar with, but each has a unique specialty and trait. For example, Maria Falck specializes in support, whose specialty is a pistol that can fire healing syringes at her allies. His trait called Combat Surgeon completely heals players when revived.

Each Specialist comes complete with a backstory and motivation to be involved in the conflict, bringing a touch of narrative and cause to the multiplayer-only game. Returning faces can also be found on the roster, including one of the closing performances of the late Michael K. Williams, reprising his role as Kimble “Irish” Graves from Battlefield 4. His specialty is called the Fortification System, which includes drop-down cover. and an APS Shootdown Sentinel to deal with pesky aerial projectiles. The Irish Veteran trait is said to provide armor with additional bonuses from downed enemies.

There are ten specialists in total to play with, and their kits are fully customizable outside of their Traits and Specialties.

Will there be “Battlefield moments”?

Let’s go. Do you think Dice would launch a multiplayer-only battlefield and put aside all the interesting, memorable, and emerging stuff? Of course, you will be able to eject yourself from the cockpit of a jet to shoot an RPG at a nearby helicopter and wingsuit in a tornado and land on another vehicle! To get mad!

Due to the collapse of Earth’s climate in 2042, weather plays a large role in the unpredictable nature of multiplayer games. In one match, you may only experience a light drizzle, but in another, a raging storm complete with one of those tornadoes mentioned above. In the style of Battlefield, use the raging weather to your advantage as cover, mobility or just enjoy spinning inside a turbulent vortex. You do it.

So when will Battlefield 2042 be released?

Battlefield 2042 will currently launch on November 19 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Early Access will be available on November 12 for anyone who pre-purchases the Gold or Ultimate editions. That same day you will see a 10-hour trial for EA Play or Xbox Game Pass subscribers.
