Chip crisis: Valve postpones Steam Deck to 2022

Actually, Steam operator Valve wanted to send its game PC in mobile console format to the first pre-orderers in December, now the release of the Steam Deck has been postponed to February 2022. The background is persistent supply bottlenecks for computer chips.

Valve is thus struggling with the same problems that plague the console manufacturers Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft: The chip factories cannot supply enough processors, the production quantities are insufficient to meet the high demand for gaming hardware. FormatValve announced its Steam Deck in July. It’s a console-sized mobile gaming PC that is somewhat reminiscent of the Nintendo Switch. At its heart is a processor with Zen 2 cores and RDNA2 graphics unit developed jointly with AMD, which, according to initial performance tests, is as potent as the main processor of a PS4. The Linux version SteamOS runs on the Steam Deck, and thanks to the Proton compatibility software, it can also handle most Windows games. The handheld gaming PC attracted numerous pre-orderers and was sold out shortly after the announcement by mid-2022. A delivery date in December – in time for Christmas – was promised to the pre-orderers. As Valve notes on steampowered.com, nothing will come of this: Although they have tried to bypass the global supply difficulties, components are now missing for the production of the first batch.
