Corona cancellations in the 2nd division: does handball have deadlines?

The pandemic wave has now also hit the 2nd handball Bundesliga. Three games on the eleventh match day were canceled. At the Eulen Ludwigshafen, players tested positive in routine corona checks. The HSC Coburg also reported “abnormalities in the context of the corona tests”. The ThSV Eisenach was hit hardest. Ten players were sent to quarantine at home after positive tests. “All of our players and employees are fully vaccinated against Corona. We actually wanted to have the third booster vaccination the week before, ”said manager Rene Witte. The players concerned did not show any difficult courses. But the next home game of Eisenach has already been canceled.

Only eight game cancellations in the 2nd division

Andreas Wäschenbach, head of the Handball Bundesliga (HBL), counted one pandemic-related failure in the first and eight in the second division, three of which are new. Including the game of VfL Lübeck-Schwartau on TV Großwallstadt (January 29th / 7.30 p.m.). The HBL is not yet in deadline, says Wäschenbach. Last season he had to postpone more than 40 games. “In November of the previous year we had twice as many game cancellations.” Wäschenbach therefore does not expect the season to start earlier in mid-January, “as many clubs have players in the European Championship”, but with a closer frequency of the games in the spring .

Schleswig-Holstein is switching to 2G

But he is also looking at the increasing number of infections with concern. Some federal states have already tightened their corona rules. In Schleswig-Holstein, unvaccinated people will no longer have access to indoor events from Monday. This also applies to THW Kiel, SG Flensburg-Handewitt and VfL Lübeck-Schwartau, which then have to switch from 3G (recovered, vaccinated, tested) to 2G. At THW, wearing an FFP2 mask is also compulsory.

Regional association: Need for clarification for the A youth

And what about the regional associations? Saxony has already suspended games at the association level. Thuringia will decide on Friday. Bavaria, Berlin, Brandenburg and from November 20 also Hamburg have already switched to 2G, Hesse to 3Gplus. And Schleswig-Holstein? “We will be accepting 2G in adults and under adults from Monday,” says HVSH President Dierk Petersen, who until then still needs clarification in youth A. “We have minors and adults in one team, so we need a uniform solution.” He is sure that there will hardly be any game cancellations. Petersen: “We also have a high vaccination rate in handball in Schleswig-Holstein.”
