Of course, there are also shimmering pocket monsters at the start in Pokémon Radiant Diamond and Shining Pearl. These are alternative versions of well-known Pokémon that have a different color scheme.

Unfortunately, the Shinys are extremely rare and have a probability of only 1 in 4096. So it can happen that you do not come across a single colorful Pokémon in a single playthrough. With our tips, however, you will significantly increase your chances.

So you catch Shinys in Pokémon Pearl / Diamond

When you are out in the grass, you can recognize a Shiny by its glitter. As I said, it is very unlikely that you will just stumble across one of the rare specimens. So we have to improve the odds in our favor. But that only works if you are masters of the Sinnoh region and have completed the regional Pokédex – for this you have to have seen each Pokémon once. Then it’s off to Sandgemme, where Professor Eich will give you the PokéRadar as well as the national Pokédex.

Here’s what you should pack: In addition to the PokéRadar, you also need protection to keep unwanted specimens away from you. Whether you use normal protection, top protection or super protection depends on the strength of the Pokémon in the respective region in which you want to hunt. You can use a ball of your choice to catch the monsters. A hyperball, a ball that is good for the type of Pokémon in question, or a reball if you’ve already caught a specimen.

The Pokémon you send into battle should also match the strength of the monsters that appear. It should be strong enough to cause damage, but not strong enough to knock out the Shiny. If it has mastered a skill like hypnosis or paralysis, so much the better. Otherwise it should be possible to use the attacks as often as possible.

This is how shiny chaining works

Once you have prepared everything, you can get down to business. We make use of the so-called shiny chain (also called shiny-chaining). The more often you catch the same Pokémon in a row, the greater the chance of a Shiny. The series goes up to 40 – from here the probability is 1 in 99 and is therefore much higher than at the beginning.

Go to a meadow and activate the PokéRadar – with protection you prevent random encounters. Some tufts of grass begin to wobble. The harder they move, the more likely it is that one of the monsters you have chosen is here. So go and catch or defeat it to start the chain. If grass is still shaking after the fight, then everything went well. You can now do this again and again until the shiny chain is interrupted.

How to break the chain: You should save before starting the process to get your items back if you fail. However, the game must not be switched off. If you escape from a fight, meet another Pokémon or leave the grass, the shiny chain also ends and you have to start over.

The newly introduced Hamanasu Park is particularly suitable for shiny hunting:

Which Pokémon can shimmer in pearl and diamond?

In some offshoots of the series there are certain Pokémon that cannot appear as Shiny. Fortunately, the exceptions in the remasters of Perl and Diamant are limited. In fact, almost all monsters you encounter can shimmer – even those you get as barter items or rewards. This includes the three starter Pokémon and the Legendarys.

There are only two Pokémon that never shine: Mew and Jirachi, which you receive as a special reward if you have played other Pokémon titles on your Switch.
