Zelda BotW: This is what the cartoon look would look like with ray tracing

Zelda: Breath of the Wild not least lives from its very special cartoon look. This comes about on the one hand through the world design of the fantasy universe, but also plays into the cards of the limited hardware performance of the Nintendo Switch. But what happens if you simply bring the role-playing game onto the PC and modd it to your heart’s content there? Does the comic look also work with ray tracing and in 8K graphics?

A completely different look for Breath of the Wild

The well-known graphic modder Digital Dreams was already doing it beginning of the year of a new look for Breath of the Wild, but has now further revised its Reshades and Mods and shows them in a current eight-minute video that presents the transformed world of Hyrule.

But see for yourself! Remember to set your preferred resolution when playing:

Digital Dreams gives BotW a raytracing reshade, 8K graphics and an infinite “level of detail” for trees and their surroundings. In contrast to real ray tracing, in which the path of individual rays is calculated physically correctly, ray tracing reshade is a filter that simulates a comparable effect during post-processing.

Of course, this feat can only be carried out with the appropriate PC hardware. The following components were used:

  • Mainboard: Asus Prime x470-Pro
  • CPU: Ryzen 9 3900x
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32Gb
  • GPU: ASUS TUF RTX 3090
  • SSD: Crucial mx500 2TB

But playing around with the look of Breath of the Wild isn’t always a success. Some pictures recently showed how strange the look would look without its typical cel-shading effect.
