Every beginner has one of the rarest weapons in the world in CoD Vanguard

In CoD: Vanguard, the developers have immortalized one of the rarest weapons in the real world in the game. But the corresponding shotgun was actually called quite differently, was extremely limited and not even intended for military use. Still, it’s one of the most common weapons in the game. Find out here what is really behind the legendary “Becker shotgun”.

What kind of weapon is it? The weapon, known under the curious name “Unicorn” in Call of Duty: Vanguard, actually wasn’t called that at all. Rather, the Wumme is a so-called “Becker shotgun”.

This weapon was designed by the “Deutsche Jagdwaffengesellschaft” in 1899, but was not mass-produced until a good 20 years later, in 1920.

Who is writing here? Jürgen Horn not only likes to play shooters, he also likes history and the facts behind the weapons and scenarios in the game. Jürgen knows most of the hummingbirds from World War II, but at first he was completely at a loss when it came to the “unicorn”. A lengthy research followed, which then led to this trivia article here.

How does the shotgun work? The Becker shotgun is a revolver shotgun, a very unusual principle in itself. Most shotguns are either classic breech-loaders or are made ready to fire again via a manual repeating mechanism, as with the classic pump gun.

The Becker shotgun, however, uses a sophisticated system of movement and gas pressure to fire semi-automatically via a 5-round revolver magazine. Only the last case has to be ejected manually using a simple mechanism.

How the shotgun looks and works in real life is well explained in this YouTube video:

The Becker shotgun is actually something like a “unicorn”

How rare is this weapon in real life? The Becker shotgun is rightly called the “unicorn” in the game. Because in real life they are likely to have seen as few people as the legendary mythical creature.

Because in 1920, when the gun went into series production, according to the sources only 100 pieces were built. The shotguns were also designed as hunting weapons, as the name of the company that designed them suggests. Military use was never the premise behind the design of the “unicorn”.

Rather, the weapon was thought to be a curious gimmick for well-heeled hunters who used it to kill various animals in German oak forests in the 1920s.

In general, the weapon does not really fit into the ranks of the otherwise more functional and martial guns that are otherwise used in the game. With its curved lines and elegant decorations, it looks like an anachronistic piece of jewelry from another world.

The numbering of the individual chambers on the revolver magazine in Roman numerals also does not match the functional design of the other German weapons from the era.

All in all, the Becker shotgun looks more like a weapon from a steampunk scenario and not like a gun from WWII.

The rarest weapon in CoD: Vanguard could hardly have been worse in truth

How often does it appear in the game? The developers of CoD Vanguard don’t seem to care about these historical facts. Because already in the campaign every second soldier of the Wehrmacht is running around with it.

Apparently the Nazis confiscated secret stocks of the Becker rifle in Vanguard and issued them en masse to the West, East and Africa fronts.

There is hardly any other explanation for the fact that the first weapon that Polina loots from a couple of stupid Germans after the attack on Stalingrad is a Becker shotgun.

Even later in the game, the thing is conveniently always lying around somewhere where its use seems particularly effective.

This is what the “unicorn” looks like in the game.

This is how often she is in multiplayer mode: The weapon is definitely more than 100 times in the game. Especially when you consider that it’s the first shotgun in multiplayer mode. Every player who starts CoD Vanguard has this shotgun first and has to grind a little before getting other shotguns.

In addition, there are absurd adaptations, such as the version shown here without a shaft, with a sawed-off barrel and – it is hard to believe – a magazine! How the revolver mechanism should still work when a magazine clip is in the middle of it, probably not even the machine god knows!

A magazine in a drum revolver? WTF?

So instead of reserving a really cool-designed and beautiful weapon as something special for the grind in the endgame, the poor unicorn is being sold off as a mass-produced product.

I would have thought it really cool to have had to grind and work properly on this rare and beautiful weapon. But how do you see that? Let us know in the comments.

Unfortunately, despite its sleek and witty design, the unicorn isn’t the top shotgun in the game. If you want a really strong shotgun, then read our guide.
