PS5: The YouTube app now supports HDR – you need to know that

Many have waited a long time for this, now the time has finally come: YouTube can now also be viewed in HDR on your next-gen console. With the latest update came HDR support for the YouTube app for your videos. We’ll tell you what you need to know.

What is HDR?
HDR stands for “High Dynamic Range” and offers a larger brightness range from the darkest to the lightest available color. As a result, it is a much higher contrast than the older SDR, i.e. Standard Dynamic Range. Although the PS5 technically supports HDR, the setting has not yet worked for the YouTube app on your console.

You have to pay attention to that

Set HDR – this is how it works: So that your YouTube app can actually output HDR, three requirements must be met:

  • The selected videos must support up to 4K / 60fps
  • There must be a VP9-2 video codec for the video
  • Your connected TV must of course also be able to output HDR
